Once again you're overanalyzing and complicating simple things.
Business practices complicate simple things. In a simple market, a new technology like stainless steel is invented and when it turns out to be favorable to metal that rusts, everyone adopts it and there's no reason to continue producing lower quality metals. Business ANALYSTS think otherwise, however, and see an opportunity in keeping bad products available to justify higher prices for the higher quality ones.

My concern is that simplicity is obstructed. Why not just make enough high quality products for everyone and dispense with the rusting, planned obsolescence stuff? Does preventing deflation really merit selling junk to promote quality?

Has anybody here actually tried a stainless steel bike? Me neither. But I have read that they ride better than a non-stainless steel frame...in addition to being rust-proof, strong, and beautiful.

What is it about stainless steel that makes it good for a bike frame?
Joe: It has all the great ride attributes of steel, but I think with much better ride attributes. Depending on the tube profiles, a stainless bike can be just as lively as the best steel frame, but it can be snappier. And, of course, stainless tubes are much stronger, and they have a naked finish that lasts without ever getting tarnished. I don’t think there’s any wall surface that has a harder surface than a stainless tube.

I just noticed Waterford sells a wonderful stainless steel frame. 22-Series Artisan Stainless

Pretty sure it's out of my price range.. my nicest bike is from 1987. Plus, I really like bike frames that are already scratched up. That way I feel need no need to obsess about new scrathes and dents.
