Do you have any examples of higher purpose from a former parking lot? Or any ideas of what a parking lot could become?

Here is an award winning design for an urban oasis in a former parking lot:

I hate parking structures a lot less when the top level is green.

Close by is Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade - a pedestrian shopping street, and you can see the Santa Monica Pier. The pier is the north end of a bike path that goes down the L.A. coast.

It is a wonderful addition to an area that's already incredibly awesome. Thousands, maybe millions of people will visit. I hope a lot of them come by bike, and they don't have to put in more parking lots to accomodate the visitors.

This reminds me of the parking structure in my city's central park downtown. It isn't green on top, but instead has public tennis courts on the roof. The parking is just a single layer, partially underground, so you mostly see the tennis courts. I think this was a brilliant way to get double use from one piece of land. I'm not certain how old this structure is, but it's obviously not new.

When I lived in Houston, TX, a guy bought property that had an old parking lot, put raised beds on it, and created a fruit and vegetable garden.

Santa Monica is gentrified to all hell. Lots of cyclists and busses there though. Still a ton of cars too.
