Too many people skip step 8. They want to be nice about it and just let the other person go.
Another step that I feel should be added is something to have preemptively arranged. Having an advocate for your life if it is taken by another person. If you have no family and you are killed or disabled there will be nobody to seek justice for the crime. The courts will just let it go as an accident and slap the driver on the wrist.

thank you very much roody for this thread. i always worry about getting hit by a car. i try and take as many precautions as possible (wear bright shirts, flashing lights, paper with all my details and emergency contact in my fanny pack) but as the article states sometimes the rider is embarrassed and just tells the driver to leave as it is no biggie.

Sadly, that's fairly typical here. If the killer isn't drunk, then there will only be a citation issued at most. This was demonstrated in a recent episode where a motorist who was speeding ran a red light and killed three children while putting their mother in the hospital. He was cited for careless driving but not prosecuted for any crime.
I could go on, but I think you get the point. Pedestrians and cyclists can be killed without consequence in many places. I'm pleased that this doesn't seem to be the case in your neck of the woods.

You must live in a nice place. In Oregon, if the victim isn't well off or well connected, the court won't trouble itself with punishing the killer. Two years ago, a local businessman got drunk at a strip bar and spread a homeless man out over a hundred meters of roadway. The killer then drove off and promptly fell asleep after parking on the freeway on ramp (where the cops found him). He was sentenced to a few weeks in county jail, which is usually served by showing up for work detail a handful of times.

Unfortunately when you do get hit, quite often you are so dazed that none of this will come to mind. I've been in two accidents and both times people who stopped advised me to sit tight and let the process happen. Number 1 is a good idea.
It's also a great idea if people stop and help. So if you see an accident, stop and see if the victim needs help.
