Stepping over to the Dark Side
Well, it's time to say goodbye to my car free posting status. We have a used hatchback (a 2009 Kia C'eed) parked in the front yard, paperwork to be finished later this week.
We have a new baby on its way and we would have to re-think our transportation modes in a couple of months' time because of that. We'll need something that one parent can use to get the two kids through snow and sleet in our winter. Older kid is OK with walking most of the time, but not always. And he can be very unpredictable at times, making walking with him in traffic an interesting experience. Bike trailer is out of the question until newcomer can support their head. Having dragged the single kid + accessory bag + groceries in a pram for a few winters makes us think a dual pram or a toddler roller is not optimal either. I was thinking maybe electric assist cargo box bike rigged with a car safety seat for the baby, but we're running out of storage. And, SO wasn't convinced about its safety either.
Like I said, we thought we would be addressing all this a bit later. But a family member lost their DL earlier due to health issues, and buying their car made sense for everyone involved. It's not the perfect car for us, I'd rather have a station wagon running on CNG than a hatchback running on gasoline, but we can always upgrade later if needed. It's in good condition with ridiculously low mileage (about 34K kms in 6 years). We'll see.
Me and SO both have mixed feelings on this, but we're taking the pragmatic approach. We agreed if we don't like car ownership, we'll just sell it away.

Congratulations on the new baby! And don't despair, it will seem like no time before those kiddos are ready to let you resume the carfree life!

Welcome to the dark side.
Roody, Rowan, and I ... and others ... have been over here for some time.
Rowan and I just attempt to live as car-light as we can, while still accomplishing all we need/want to do.
