I voted "yes," but it's complicated....

I've never owned a car, but for many years my wife and I kept a car in both our names. Having the car registered under both names proved a little complicated, and I was never much interested in it anyway, and the last two cars have been in her name alone. This change occurred after I discovered this forum. This change makes me, technically, car free. As for this forum... I had never thought of myself as "car-free", but this forum introduced me to the term, and encouraged me to consider whether my lifestyle might be called "carfree." I'm not convinced it is, but it's an aspiration, and this forum is the only place I discuss it with anyone... so....

So, well, yes.

fwiw I'd say you're not carefree if you live with your wife and drive cars that are just technically not in your name. Not certain that's what you're saying here though.

IMO you're not car free if you conduct any personal business or recreation by driving a car that is owned by you or another member of your household.

If having your name removed from the title made you car free, I'd think again.

I tend to agree but at the same time, car-lite and car-free are more of a continuum, or even a matrix, rather than a strict categorization. Some technically car-free people may actually ride in or even drive cars more than some car-lite people. Imagine a situation where two people live as roomates, and next door two people live as a couple, and in both cases, one resident of each household owns a car. If the spouse of one car owner actually spends less time in their household's car, than the roomie of the other car owner does in that car - who is really car free?

I think it comes down to how you live. If an automobile is what delivers food and supplies to your household and gets you around town to do your buisiness then you're not car free regardless of whether you are on a title. If you own a car with your wife but she does all the shopping etc then it's a stretch to call that car free.

But of course call it what you want. It's a free country!

What if you only drive stolen cars?

Well, sadly, I agree on all points. FWIW I don't drive for my own purposes; I drive only when family requires it of me. "Car-free" is an aspiration for me (and as such, YES, this forum is an inspiration). I agree it is not a reality, but even so, I am the most car-free person I know. I would gladly be a lot more car-free. But I would also be a lot less married, albeit less gladly.

I get that loud and clear. There's actually a couple things more important than being car free!
