How Was Your Commute Today?

The Commuting Forum has a thread just like this, however it is, of course, for cycling commutes. Since we don't need to limit ourself to cycling over here in the LCF forum, we can talk about our no-car or limited-car commutes.

Did you walk to work or school? Use your scooter or kickbike? Rollerblade? Take the bus? Car-pool? Or maybe you did ride a bicycle.

If you feel unsure what to post, wander over to the Commuting forum and see what kinds of things they're talking about.

It was a sunny and toasty-warm 22°C this morning ... the warmest morning we've had in a while. I was running just slightly late so had to dash to the bus stop ... but the bus was running late as well, so it worked out all right.

The bus was crowded, as usual. I wish they could put one of the bigger busses on that particular route, but the route has so many twists and turns and sharp climbs on very narrow roads before it leaves our suburb there would be no way they could fit a larger bus on the route.

And for some reason, this week the traffic has been thick and slow going into town. I'm not sure why because it has been pretty good for several months. Can't wait till the kids are on school holidays in about a month!

An observation I've made recently ... most of the bus users are women, going to work in town, who look roughly in their early 30s to early 60s. Today, for example, I'd venture a guess that 90% of the passengers were women. The men are significantly outnumbered.

When we finally arrived, it was a quick walk and a climb up 5 flights of stairs to arrive at my office.

Days are getting shorter. When I leave home in the morning it's dark and when I get home in the late afternoon it's dark...Today was just a normal day, commute went smoothly, ran some errands, nothing unusual.

Down here the daylight hours are getting longer ... it's nice. For some reason winter seemed really long to me this year.

Traffic was lighter today on the way into town ... must be that more people take Friday off work ... so I got off a stop early and walked a bit extra.

Today I stopped at a local park and did a short intense outdoor workout on my way home from work, 20 minutes of pull ups and push ups... This is part of my regular routine and I do that often.

I used to have a 40 mile RT bicycle commute and I loved it. Now I telecommute. It's nice having the flexibility. And the morning is more relaxed. I make coffee and shuffle into my office space. But it's harder to get in the same kind of bicycle miles recreationally as I did commuting. And it feels a bit harder to justify sometimes. There's no questioning the bicycle ride when it has a purpose related to keeping your job!

Yesterday I woke up tired and went through the motions of getting to work ... walk to the bus, ride the bus, walk to work ... and the moment I walked in the door, I realised I had a meeting in another building about 5 blocks away! We all walk between buildings here, so it was a quick dash up there, and fortunately, the meeting had only just begun a minute or so before I got there.

So by noon, I had already walked 2 km and climbed 10 flights of stairs.

Today was more relaxed and since the bus had a good run into town, I got off at an earlier stop and ended up walking with one of my coworkers.

A very light dusting of snow on this mornings commute, winter is on its way...I love the feeling of fresh cold crisp air early in the mornings.

I didn't commute today because it's my day off. But I did pedal to the bus stop. Take the bus downtown. Rode my bike around downtown visiting the library and two banks. I arrived back at a bus stop with minutes to spare and caught the bus toward home. I got off at the grocery store, bought some groceries and pedaled home.

It was chilly by our standards--'feels like' temps down in the high 50's this morning. I still made the mile in shorts and a t-shirt; the struggle is real.

We got about 8 inches of snow over the weekend. Now it is compacted and melting, but the world still looks fresh and new. I didn't commute today because it's my day off. I walked downtown to the credit union and the Peanut Shop, and walked home also.

Good commute today: high 20s on the way in, high 30s on the way home, and a nice clear sky. I stopped on the way back to pick up a sympathy card and get some junk food for my junk food junkies at home.

Fast ... today's commute was really fast and I arrived at work about 15 min early. It's Friday, and I suspect several people must be taking the day off work.

My commutes this week have been interesting ....

Tuesday, the morning guy was in a bad mood, grouching at everyone who got on the bus.

Wednesday, he was running really late and was herding people onto the bus and telling them to go sit down without paying.

Today, he was all sweetness and light ... even to the little old lady who wanted to tell him her life story while digging out 5 cent pieces from the bottom of her handbag.

It amuses me.

Anyway, I got off the bus early today so I could get an extra walk in, and then I left work early and wandered around the shopping area of our suburb waiting for Rowan and taking in the last minute Christmas Eve sales.

And while browsing through a shop, I looked up and saw a painting, I had to have. It reminds me of Paris ... or it could be a number of other European cities, with bicycles on a bridge.

This week my commute has been ... fast!

The kids are on school holidays so there is less traffic on the road, and the bus isn't quite so full. The bus driver is also very business-like and efficient to try to speed things up.

Therefore, twice this week, I got off a stop early and walked the rest of the way to work because I had the time to do that.

This week, my commute has been interesting.

They've changed the bus schedules, the bus numbers and even (inexplicably) the bus stop letters at the bus mall.

So I've been trying out a bus that picks me up about 15 min later than my usual bus. I think, next week, I'll return to my usual bus. The new bus I've been trying showed a lot of promise on the first day, but has been arriving in town a little bit later and a little bit later each day.

Going home has been an adventure. On the first day, there were about 100 people standing along the bus mall trying to figure out where they should be ... and 2 people in hi vis vests trying to direct us all. It didn't help that the bus drivers were confused as well, and when mine pulled up all the spots were taken and we were herded out into the road, between buses.

I'll be glad when things settle a bit.

My commute was ... late.

They seem to be having trouble with one of the new buses on the route. It is supposed to arrive at a certain time, but just doesn't ... and ends up playing leapfrog with the next bus which is supposed to arrive 10 min later. But that bus is also usually about 5 or 10 minutes late, making the first bus 15-20 min late ... and to me, that's a fairy significant time to be running late.
