    Bicycle and Cycling-Related Advertising

Since the topic of bicycle and cycling-related advertising has come up in another thread, I thought it might be an interesting topic on its own.

Talk about the bicycle and cycling-related advertising in your area. Or any advertising that promotes human-powered transportation ... or public transportation. Anything that encourages car-light or car-free living in some way.

If you can, post a link to the ad or show us a video clip or whatever.

We watch many of the cycling events ... fortunately, our main TV channels cover many of them ... and there are always bicycle ads.

Avanti Plus is probably the main one.

Mountain Bikes | Road Bikes | Cycling Parts & Accessories | Comfort Bikes | Fitness Bikes | Kids Bikes | BMX | AvantiPlus AUS

I'll have to see if I can find some of their commercials.

Those were some nice ads. Locally, we have next to nothing. The local bus company does a bit of half-hearted stuff on the buses, but I think they are put together by their staff, which consists entirely of people who get everywhere they go by car; the only exceptions are the bus drivers, who are obviously on the bus while at work.

I think the only bike ads I see are when I watch cycling on Eurosport on the internet. Who would do cyling ads in the US? Most of the bikes are sold at Wal-Mart for under $100. I don't think they see any need to spend ad money on bikes. While bike-specific companies like Trek, Giant and Specialized certainly make money selling their bikes, I think their target audience is people who already know enough that an ad is unlikely to reach them. It should be something that a public health department would do, but they are notoriously underfunded and our local one is properly focused on things like vaccinations and drinking issues.

    Those ones aren't bad ...

This one was a little odd. They've stoppped playing it and are playing the "Distance makes a Difference" one above instead.

Where we used to live in Victoria, we got ads like this one ... it seems to me there were 3 or 4 variations of it.

I can’t think of any particularly motivating or clever advertising about bicycling as an activity per se, but a couple of years ago I engaged in a thread about bicycling as an advertising motif for other products. Cycling was portrayed as a winning, healthy activity in some advertisements about pharmaceuticals and surgical procedures, particularly for arthritis; or as a losing activity in some advertisements for autos and finance companies because the cyclist couldn’t afford a car.

One exception was a magazine ad for Radio Shack (in Men's Health Magazine, I think) featuring Lance Armstrong on a trainer with the quote,"No man over the age of 30 will ever use emoticons — no colon parentheses smiley faces…” It didn’t motivate me to ride, but did change my style of posting.

The only time I've ever seen cycling specific ads was when watching pro cycling on tv or when its a week or two before and after RAGBRAI. Could be that I don't watch a lot of tv or the right channels when I do.
