Do you have to pay to take your bike on the train?

If I had any money, I would finance a prize for people who innovate better bike storage on public transit. Like you say, trains could hold a lot of bikes without taking space away from other uses. The racks on buses are also imperfect--too slow and cumbersome, and they don't hold enough bikes, and they don't hold different sizes/shapes such as recumbents, tandems, fat bikes, or even kid's bikes.
