What's the worst thing...

...you've had thrown at you?

In living car free we are generally out on the roads often and unfortunately to some, a target. For me, I've had a fire-cracker thrown at me. It exploded about two feet from my head. A little ringing in the ears was the result. I was unable to get a plate number. Bad juju on them!

All in all I've ridden thousands of miles here in Vermont and I'm thinking I'm luckier than most as I've never been hit by anything and only thrown at a few times. (knock on wood)

dont know, it flew over my head when I went by the side of his bus.......I was sharing the lane with him while he was stopped, he started to move when I got to about mid bus, saw his side window slide open, I saw something white in his side mirror flash and I ducked.........heard it hit the street after I passed him, it didnt hit me.

I had someone in a car heave a wendy's cup full of soda at me once from oncoming lanes of traffic once too, people are stupid, and being on a bike makes one a target.

Ive had all sorts of silly stuff happen over the last few years, most of the time its more of a lame attempt than anything. Actually hitting a rider with something isnt all that easy.

A full bottle of beer by some bastard kids... Oh, I was pretty upset (a clean way to put it). The beer splashed on the back of my head as it went by and busted on the road behind me. They may have tried to misss, but I felt the wind, so It was WAY too close for comfort. Would have went back but there were too many of them and I didn't care to deal with that.

A can of soda. It missed by a couple feet. I was riding near Husky stadium about half an hour before a football game. A couple guys in a pick-up drove by and threw it.

I haven't had much thrown at me, but have had a few verbal confrontations. I've been honked at, responded by flipping the bird, and they respond in kind.

I've had people literally aim their cars straight at me on several occasions -- the most recent 13 days ago. I remember one guy in 2001 blasted through a red light at high speed in a deliberate attempt, failed to negotiate an intersection and smashed his car up really badly on the other side. None of the other things I've had thrown at me are anywhere near as heavy as a car.

The saddest part is the knowledge that the police won't do a thing about it. :(

damn... homicidal drivers... haven't experienced that yet... I have been hit by a guy who looked "through" me without registering me as an actual moving vehicle, but he was nearly as shocked as I.

come to think of it, once I was on a road where an interstate exit ramp merges onto it... the exiting traffic from the interstate has a yield sign, I had the right of way... as I was approaching the merge point I noticed that the tractor trailer was moving too fast to yield... I'm normally pretty aggressive with claiming my space on the road but the truck being so big and heavy, I yielded... actually I swung to the left a little and rode beside the truck, basically only a few feet from the driver... we made eye contact and then he 'juked' the wheel to the left, swerving at me... that big a truck is certainly not what I would call nimble and I easily avoided him.... guess it was a game of chicken to him... how proud he must've been to win that battle.

A 40 oz bottle of whatever. It clipped my knee and went through the front triangle. The guy was pissed that I was trackstanding at an intersection and wasn't setting off the traffic sensor fast enough. At the time I didn't have proper track nuts on my track bike, so I was using wingnuts and vice grips. At the next intersection I rode up to him and used the vice grips to yank out the valve stem on his rear tire, then hightailed it home.

I thank God that I have not had anything tossed at me. I only had someone called me crazy, and yell at me, but nothing more than verbal assults.

Cigarette buts seem common for me. I've only been hit once with no ill effect. It still pisses me off though.

A friend of mine was hit in the back with a clay flower pot (with flower).

What? No ones that much of an *******, or can they?. Sure you weren't trailing behind a bus breathin in a little too much diesal exhaust?

Paintball blast myself. I was coming home late in the evening with groceries, a car full of stupid teens pulled next to me, one of them got a paintball gun through the window and tak-tak-tak-tak. Net results: ruined clothing, bruises all over my body, and the scare of my life when I saw the muzzle come out of the car. But I didn't go down :)

timmhaan 12-02-05 11:39 AM

beer bottle, big gulp, snow ball, and snaps (those little things kids get from the dollar store that snap when you throw them against something).

yeah, people are like that. i remember a few times when i was crossing an intersection as a pedestrian and hearing a car speed up and i would literially have to run out of the way as they zoomed through 50mph over the speed limit. if i could get my hands on them i would beat them to death.

I_Suck_At_BMX 12-02-05 03:24 PM

i got a long list since i'm a bmxer and always in the rode getting in peoples way.
-Beer bottle which smashed on my frame
-Handful of change which hurt like hell
-A big soda from 7/11 which just missed my head
-A Basketball which almost hit my riding buddy
-A water baloon
-A newspaper
-Cigarettes
-egg which didnt break but stung
-many sodas never which hit

along with this ive had many people swerve at me, jump out of the car and chase me, and call me every name in the book.

I have had a late 60's yellow pick up run me off the road. Nothing thrown at me but alot of mean drivers trying to scare me. I think the persn in the truck was high, because he is always smoking weed. Scary to think if I wouldn't of heard him I would of been his new hood ornament!

Artkansas 12-02-05 04:54 PM

A can of Coke bounced off my helmet on the way to work from Jury Duty. Coke all over me, but I was glad I had my helmet on. No provocation on my part, two lanes of road + a bike path on the side, they had plenty of room.

Recently, someone threw a container of Sonic French Fries at me and missed. And they forgot the ketsup.

becnal 12-03-05 03:17 AM

Just reading this thread absolutely infuriates me! God, I am afraid to think what I would do in such a situation. I am a super mellow guy, but if something like this happened to me, I would simply becomed enraged.

Then I would take off after the F*$%'ers in an anger-induced, Sith-like rage, hoping against hope to catch up to them so that I could punch my bike-glove-covered hand right through their driverside window.

Then they would jump out of the car, beat the crap out of me, and I would probably get arrested.

Of course, this whole scenario is exactly why I will never return to america.

Not too many buses in on more than about one or two roads in this city -- I wasn't tailing a bus or anything else in any of these situations. There are laws in this country that make it harder for people like this to get guns, so I suppose they just use other weapons.

just last night a car pulled into my lane and stopped suddenly...i couldn't stop fast enough and rammed into the car. as i landed, they drove off. yes, people are asshats like that. there's something amusing about potentially seriously injuring others, i suppose.

other than the occasional car, nothing has ever come flying toward me. flipped off, "get off the road", two cars threatening me, one of which happened to nearly hit me a moment earlier. yeah, i guess i can see their point. what right did i have to be upset about nearly being hit with a 3000 pound object going 35 mph? we cyclists sure are dicks, guys....

Satyr 12-03-05 03:55 AM

I have the fortune of riding in places that accept and promote cycling, but a few weeks ago a friend and I had a small log hurled at us from some little troglydte school kid hanging out in a copse of trees. Usually I do not look to violence, and do not like to get worked up over things, but I especially have problems abiding destructive youth. I was very close to turning my bike around and smacking the punk around a bit, but cooler heads prevailed.

Punks think they are hot stuff until you lay down the Backhand of Justice.
