Carfree Moving Day
I'm right in the middle of moving to a new apartment, so I thought I'd pass along some of my experiences that might be of interest to other carfree folk:
1. My new apartment will cost me about $680 a month, including utilities. The only reason I can afford that much (without working more) is because I don't have car expenses. If i was spending a couple hundred on a car, I would have to get a roommate, or settle for a crappy apartment.
2. Location was a main concern for me. I like to be close to my main destinations, and on a bus line just in case. I ended up moving only about a half-mile (less than 1 km, patc) from my old apartment. I'm a little further from work and downtown, but closer to the supermarket and other amenities. The way this city is set up, I would not consider the suburbs, although some sections of East Lansing were considered.
3. I did not move by bike. Sorry! That would have made a great story. Tomorrow I will borrow a truck from a friend for a couple hours to move my crap. Another good friend is helping me schlepp stuff.
4. The simple life makes moving a lot easier. I am only taking about two truckloads of stuff. I say "only," but it's still a lot, and more than most people have. Actually I'm throwing out and recyling almost another truckload, accumulated in living in one place for only threee years. Books, furniture, clothing and kitchen stuff make up the bulk of my stuff.
5. I hope, god willing, to live in this new apartment for many years, maybe even the rest of my life. I usually set down pretty deep roots, and transplanting myself is pretty traumatic.
