I'm guessing that the car-free people here store their daily-use bikes in different places but i'm curious as to how you deal with it.

I store my bike on our building's porch under a tarp, locked to an iron fence. A garage would be nice, but hey, you don't always get what you want.

Do those of you with xtracycles store them indoors? In a garage? Outside?

My bike unfortunately gets some rain exposure under its tarp, and I know that because every time it rains, the chain lube gets washed off and usually i see some rust on the chain. But, in keeping with my low-budget student life, I live in a small place and there's no room for a bike inside. plus, I don't want to carry my bike upstairs anyway.

I used to store my bikes in my kitchen. Since I moved recently, I have use of a nice heated garage. (Not to boast or anything. )

At work (a hospital), I park outdoors in the physician's parking lot, under a security camera, chained to a sturdy railing. I love coming out of work on a winter night and finding my bike covered with a couple inches of fresh sparkling snow.

BTW, in my opinion bikes are outdoor equipment, and it's OK to store them outdoors if you have to. Keep them well lubed and there should be no problem, in my experience.

My bike gets stored in my living room at home, my server room at work. The wife's bike and the two other bikes get stored on our little patio.

Oh how I miss this...my bike got deported from my living room to my patio (under a tarp but it seems to be dry enough) because of a couch.

Home when raining or snowing: Living room
Job 1: Outside, locked to a 3" railing by the door
Job 2: Inside in the back workroom (at my boss's insistance!)

I'm allowed to keep both my bikes off to the side in the living room. The wife deals with it, they really don't stick out too much since their against the wall. When I get my third bike, I'm going to put it in our son's bedroom. I want an xtracycle next year, to complete the collection, but I don't know if I'll want to drag it upstairs all the time.

My racing bike and soon-to-be-disposed-of-piece-of-crap rain bike are currently in the computer room. My fairweather commuter is in the dining room, and my girlfriend's bike is behind a sofa in the living room. We don't have much storage space :-\

Basement, usually (I have a fully-equipped but tiny bike shop in a seperate room in the basement). Some bikes migrate upstairs in different rooms (It's amazing how a celeste Bianchi blends in with forest-green walls!) then wife complains (depending in her mood) and they all go back in the basement again!

When it was being ridden regularly it was usually tucked under the overhang of the back porch or chained to some immovable object at my work place. Currently I have the bulk of my bikes in a Conex (storage container) that serves as my shop. I have 2 here in my motel room with me and a folder in the back seat of my truck I used to keep one or two in the house, but after I got married and she redecorated using WHITE carpet that kind of put an end to that. (But the trade off was worth it )

my wife's and my MTN bikes hang upside down from the rafters of the garage and my Xtracycle gets parked in a stall of the garage where my truck used to be!

the xtracycle hangs from the ceiling of the big room, by the front door. plenty of clearance underneath it to, eg, open the closet or walk beneath. two-pulley system with venetian-blind style stopper and cleat on the wall. works great.

Living room: two functional bikes, one "project" bike, one bike repair stand, one "bike tree" (former x-mas tree with branches cut to a few inches in length from which bike related stuff hangs: locks, helmets, gloves, ankle bands etc), a load of bike tools and accessories.

Balcony: one rotting corpse of a bike, used for spare parts occasionally.

Closet: a venerable old 10-speed that's earned its rest and is pretty unrideable at this point anyway.

Divorced and single, so bikes share my bedroom, as no one else does at this time. At work it is right in the shop as we are all bike geeks.

Summer, in the backyard shed. In the winter, there's no path through the snow, so it spends the night on the enclosed (but unheated) front porch. At work, year-round, locked to the bike rack 10' from the door. (And every year I always have to remind the snow maintenance crew that yes, I'm crazy, but I do actually ride my bike all year, so please give the bike rack a few quick shovels, please. The motorists don't have to shovel out their parking spaces! )

Bike stand and expensive tour bike live in the spare bedroom watched by my very timid and eager to run away at high speeds from anything deemed scary (everything) greyhound. My less expensive project bike is downstairs in a locked storage space.

I'm lucky enough to have an extra room in the back of the flat. It stays there. I've got a watch-cat for it too, heh.

Also lucky enough that my work put in a bike locker inside, at the bottom of the stairwell up to my floor. Nice...

Townhouse w/ a carport
My 2 bikes live in my bedroom hanging from the ceiling and my daughters is under the basement stairs. Mine ended up in my room after trying to make the basement more liveable again. My room is in the basement also, they don't seem too out of place.

At work I just bring it up stairs w/ me and the bike is propped on a wall near my cubicle.
