Anyone in Philly?

Any carfree people in Philadelphia? I'm thinking of moving to the northwest area of town (Mt. Airy) and wondered if anyone lives there.

I'm not in Mt Airy...not a bad place to be car-free (don't know where groceries are btw) but it's near a few good bus lines and the train goes right into downtown

Cool. I'm going to scope out the area in January. What part of town are you in?

I've heard the local grocery store sucks, but I've also heard good things about the Weaver's Way Coop.

I'm in South Philly. Husband and I are both car free.

I've been to Mt. Airy (by train) a few times and I think its a very pretty neighborhood.

I'm car-light and I live in west philly.

If you're still undecided as to where to live, I'd highly recommend the Clark Park (45th and Baltimore Ave.) area of West Philly. It's not the safest area of town but it's a lot better than the stereotypes say- and it's very affordable. Mt. Airy is a wealthier and more expensive neighborhood that (in my opinion) has less of a neighborly feeling than the Clark Park area.

Either way, I'd recommend buying a lot of your groceries at Trader Joe's- almost everybody who's tried TJ's loves it.

From what I can tell from Craigslist postings the rental prices in Mt. Airy seem to be pretty reasonable. I'll be sure to check that area out as well! I am a longtime fan of Trader Joe's already, so having one nearby would definitely be a plus

If you move to Philadelphia check out the University of Pennsylvania's online apartment listings:

http://george.isc-seo.upenn.edu/ocla..._listings.html
http://www.business-services.upenn.edu/offcampusliving/

It's a lot like a second Philly Craigslist, for housing only. Last I looked, the average prices on the upenn website were lower than Craigslist.

mt. airy isn't really a wealthy area, but its right next to chesnut hill which most definetly is.

i live in the fishtown area. most parts are pretty nice, if you look around on craigslist you can find some very affordable apts/houses to rent. Depending on where you are in fishtown you're only 2-3 miles from center city, and close to the El which goes downtown as well. Groceries and everything else are easily accesible, there's many small corner stores, as well as larger chain stores in some shopping centers near by.

I go to school in Mt. Airy. It seems to be pretty cool. There is a bike shop on Germantown Ave. just over the edge of Mt. Airy called Wissahickon Cyclery. I've been in there once and test rode a bike. The guys seem pretty friendly.
