Car Donation Websites

Now that I've made it through December being able to reliably get to work and the store without too much difficulty, I want to donate my car with one of those donation programs. There are several that I've found with a simple Google search, but I was wondering if anyone here had good experiences to share or other pointers regarding which is the "best" or at least that they know is reputable. Thanks in advance.

hi cy,
you may do like I did..and look first for a chairty (my case a faith based orgz)..in your county that takes the vechicle, fixes it up, and then gives to a needy family, in your same county.

Hope it works well for you..

Thanks, I did end up doing a version of this and ended up at www.carsforhomes.org (Habitat For Humanity.) So now it's official. There'll be no car in the driveway in a few days. It's kind of strange, but I'll be saving all that dough and also the earth and what have you. So I'm glad I did it. Thanks again.

I think habitat for humanity is great. Good for you for donating to them.

There was a local story where a guy donated a car to a charity and the charity sold/gave it to a needy person or whatever they do, but the recipient never titled it in the recipient's name and proceeded to get into a bad accident. To make a long story short, the donor got sued becuase the owner of the car can be held liable when that car gets into an accident.

This type of law may vary from state to state, but you should make sure the charity you donate it to takes title to the vehicle so you can limit your exposure to this type of situation. One company who takes title, at least the location on tv was the salvation army.

Here in California, you have to fill out a special form surrendering all interest in a vehicle., whenever you sell or in this case give it away. You can even, as I did, fill out the form online at the DMV website. So I'm guessing there was no similar setup in this person's state or other jurisdiction. It seems likely though that it eventually would have worked itself out when the circumstances became known. That would be a bummer though, you're right.
