How to get to work?
 

I've been car free for almost 2 years and bike to work everyday, except today. We got some new snow last night so I skiied! This got me thinking how many different ways I can get to work without a car. It is about 2 miles with a bikepath or residential street the entire way. I live on a lake, and my job is close to the lake so I could make it about 3/4 of the way by water. I am an electrician, so it doesn't matter what I look like when I get to work. I've come up with the following, some waiting until spring though.

1. Bike
2. Ski
3. Walk
4. Run
5. Rollerblade
6. Swim
7. Canoe

Have I missed anything that sounds fun?

Of course, this would best be done behind a wakeboat sporting a 6 litre V8 (no catalytic converter of course). But it's not a car so that should be fine, right?

Kevin, the obvious one for you would be to ice skate. I remember when I was a kid my dad would skate beyound my sight on the lake and come back hours later. I wonder what adventures he had? A frozen lake or river is the best place in the whole world, IMO, whether skating, skiing, walking or especially riding a bike.

Some people in DC get around on their skateboards. Maybe skateboard is also an option for you.

I used snowshoes for commuting to work for two days last week. Thats one hell of a work out!:eek:

Thanks fo the help, I'll try to skate when the snow melts of the lake. I don't think skating through 2' of snow would be any fun. If I can find a pair of snowshoes I'll try that also. That couch is the coolest thing I have ever seen. I've not skateboarded in 15 years, but that might be fun as well.

Some people in Ottawa ice skate down the Rideau canal to work.

There are a lot of motorized carless options. Various forms of motorized small vehicles, many of which have high-emissions two-stroke motors, some electric. Then there's Segway and the cheaper, non-motorized device that can be used in almost all the same situations: the scooter!

Scooters like Razor and the pneumatic-tire scooters which went out of fashion years ago can be a great option for short-distance travel. Another option I'm partial to is wheelie shoes-- those things kids wear so that they can look almost like they're wearing regular shoes and gliding over the ground.

Sheesh, Roody. A palanquin is when you sit in a wheeled office chair and rocket around by spraying fire extinguishers.

I was just going to suggest that. I'm planning on moving much closer to town in the next year or two and am so looking forward to skating again for transportation. I'm a bit older now (34) though so I may not be as fast as I used to be. Oh well, skating was always about fun anyway.
