Best weekend on a bike EVER!

I kicked off this weekend by skipping my last class on Friday afternoon to pick up some new cranks for my fixie, then go watch the Tour of Missouri bike race roll into Columbia. Me and some friends, most of whom work at a local shop, rode out to a spot with a great view of where they'd be cornering hard off of the highway and onto a side-street into downtown. We got great pictures, and it was really amazing how fast they were moving.

Anyway, after the last of the pack went by, we rode up to the finish for all the post-race festivities. The street was packed with fans, and it was really great to see the entirety of the local bike-culture all in one place. The hip young-guns, commuters, roadies, and mountain-bikers all really popped out of the woodwork. And of course, it was cool to see riders no older than myself up on the stage for awards.

After all that, I had to take off, because my friends were throwing a cook-in at their apartment, and I was bringing the wine. My friends live quite a ways outside of downtown (my normal riding range) and usually I take about 30 minutes of riding on trails to get there. But today, after seeing the race, I decided to take the highway instead of the trail, and I really pushed it. I cut my normal time in half and made it there in 15 minutes. I was stoked, splitting lanes and passing cars going uphill and everything. Here's the route, which is quite hilly (I'm proud)

So anyway, the dinner was great, and I ended up staying the night. Saturday morning I rode home, and this time I did take the trails. I got home and had hardly any time to rest up before it was time for me to go pedi-cab at 11. This weekend was a home game here at the University of Missouri, so I really got a workout on the cab, pedaling around the whole tail-gate scene at the stadium, with an occasional fare wanting a ride downtown. I worked a little over 5 hours, and came out $200 for the better. Today, I'm just chilling and resting up for the week upcoming. Anyway, just wanted to share that little bike narrative.

Sounds as if you had a great time!

That's really nice seeing the mix of people at the race, too.

I wanted to volunteer for the St. Charles part of the tour... but I couldn't make it to the training meetings so I stayed all weekend in Rolla writing a research paper instead. Awesome you got to see it!

A bike on Hwy 63! Hardcore. Maybe it's not as bad in Columbia as it is here in Rolla.. I'd rather ride on the interstate.

I've never been to Rolla, but it's not that bad here. Plus like I said, I was feeling gutsy.
