My parents both worked and both had cars in the 1960s, but we lived in an older inner suburb where the kids all walked or biked to school. My dad always encouraged physical activity. My brother and I got Japanese 10 speeds around 1969 in the "bike boom" period and we both biked to school or to sports actviites some of the time. He still bikes to work occasionally (in his late 50s), although his family are fairly car-heavy. I biked to work only occasionally til I was 40 and consistently since then (20+ years). Going forward, one of my kids has no driver's license at age 32. He doesn't bike, just takes public transit.
