What do you need? It's just a thread about a woman who wants to sell her cars and get a Mini Cooper. It sounds like she lives close to me. She's right about the public transportation here in Little Rock. I'm not sure she's ready for going car-free, especially since she has kids. There is a used Mini Cooper at the local Lexus dealer, should I tell her about that so she doesn't have to go to Memphis?

What help do you need?

Not her particular situation; if you'll go a little lower, you'll see that it drifts over into the viability of a bicycle as a transportational tool, as opposed to a children's toy or adult sporting device. That's what I need the help on. (However, she might appreciate the pointer to the MC at the Lexus dealer.)

Well, having looked at it. You are going to need the correct and specific statistics to battle with Chloe. Her mind is made up.

I don't have the proper statistics, unfortunately. Some of the applicable ones would also show that bicycle deaths happen primarily to the young males as I recall, and from my following the news in the Coachella Valley, it seemed that most of the people hurt/killed on bikes were doing something flakey at the time. Again, that is only my impression.

There are lies, d*mned lies and statistics.

Well, now that I've read the whole thing, I don't think you can win this one.

You did hijack the thread. It devolved into name calling. The issue has been lost.

So for future reference, here's what I might suggest.

Get all your statistics together ahead of time.

Don't push. Stay friendly. Arguments like I saw there never convince other people. They just tend to push them further into their corners. It's entertainment in the road forum, but it won't persuade them at Snopes.

It's okay to suggest a bicycle. Do it over and over. Make it fun and don't press more unless they respond favorably. Bit by bit, a few people may start to include it in their thinking. Some like bthyb have good comments. #96 seemed to sum up how they were reacting. Once you get a negative emotional reaction like you are seeing there, it's hard to get back to a level ground for discussion.

Good luck.
