Different Spokes
A new exhibit just opened at the Statehouse Museum called Different Spokes. It's about bicycle in Little Rock. A cool exhibit. It had a picture of Clinton riding his bike in the White House, and a bike given to Hillary as her "Bike One". A really nice stars and stripes paint job on a tricked out beach cruiser.
I learned that there used to be an AMF bicycle factory in Little Rock, as well as a bicycle track with the largest grandstands in Arkansas. Sadly, both are gone now.
I discovered that the State Capitol is where the State Penitentiary used to be.
There were all kinds of pictures of bicycles in and around Little Rock.
Nice to see. And I noticed that downtown Little Rock has it's first bicycle store.

Here's a detail of one bike that was on exhibit. It's a hand-made single speed. Love the wooden gear teeth.

Looks like you better hurry, the dates are 5/10/2014 - 6/30/2014 as near as I can tell.

Sounds cool. I sure would like to pedal that wooden bike. I bet it was quite a workout. People say it was the invention of metal ball bearings that really made bicycles possible.
I never knew the Clintons had a bike connection. I've seen pictures of Obama riding with his daughters in Chicago. And of course George W. Bush was a hardcore mountain biker.

I'm guessing that wooden bicycle didn't last too long as a rideable vehicle. Looks like the chain did a very efficient job of chipping the teeth on the gears.

Presidents and Bikes
I can also find evidence that Woodrow Wilson was a cyclist.
This button links Mc Kinley to cycling, but since the only references to the National Wheelmen's Club that I can find refer buttons like this, it's possible that the NWC was an early day astroturf political group designed to make it look as though Mc Kinley had the support of cyclists.

The stories of Wilson and A.A. Adee were very interesting. They illustrate the decline of bikes and the rise of cars in the early 1900s. The book looks like it might be interesting. Is it out yet?

Carter rode a lot after he retired. There are news reports from around 2009 where his bicycle was stolen from the Carter Center in Atlanta. He apparently has several different bikes. The ones stolen were Trek Globes.
