I was hoping DL was short for "Raleigh DL-1". Not that I know why anyone would give one up.

What if you want to rent a car to go on a trip?
What if you want to purchase a plane ticket?

state issued photo ID.

You know, a DL was never meant to be govt. ID. The powers snuck it in, through a very gradual process. We never voted on it. There was no public discussion. It suited the government and the financial system to have state ID, so they snuck it in.

Won't let you drive a rental car.

Perfectly good for riding an airplane and other identification purposes though.

Just had my birthday 2 days ago and I'm just now realizing that my drivers license is 2 days expired . I'm going to renew soon, but I have no particular plans to actually use it - I have very rarely rented a car but I want to have the option.

Mine was expired for a few months. I finally needed it in order to renew my library card. I fought the library on that, but thry won.

All told. the library card is much more useful to me than the driver's license. I do drive 5 or 10 miles in a typical month, but I haven't been pulled over in more than 20 years.

BTW,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CEREWA!

i don't rent cars, so that's not an issue for me.

and if i really needed to drive somewhere (e.g. emergency), i still remember how to do it..

Yup. I remember too:
  1. You put the stick-thingy on D and punch on the the pedal on the right. (I don't know why they call them pedals cuz they don't go round & round.)
  2. If you see somebody on a bike, blow the horn and wave your finger at them.
  3. When you get tired and want to stop, you squeeze the lever by the steering wheel, which is what they call the handlebars.
  4. It's pretty easy, really--easy as falling off a bike.

Why give it up doesn't cost me anything more? It would just be symbolic.

Twice since I went car-free in '99, my driver's license has expired.

The first time, it was over a year before I noticed. I had to start all over again with the written test and Learner's Permit. I never got around to taking the five-hour course and road test. This past June, (four years later) that expired.

Meanwhile, new licenses are $80 (plus the stupid written test again, plus the five-hour course, plus the road test). I'm wondering, why should I spend $80+ to replace something I haven't used in ten years?

I've never owned a car in my life, but I went to a driving school as soon as I was old enough. I rent occasionally, and I'm also a member of a local car share system. Both require valid license.

I still drive my wife's car some, and will drive the moving truck when we move next week. Even if the family went completely car-free, which I doubt I would still maintain a license because you never know when it will be required.

Crap, I just came from my bank that I have a checking account with and they wouldn't let me open a savings account because my dl is expired, even though I have an active checking account. Lame I guess I will have to conform and get it renewed.
Edit: I just called texas dps and I have to take the silly driving test all over again this will be difficult since I don't own a car.

Something I learned many years ago is that if you can get a certification, get it. And once you have it, keep it in force.

You'll never know when a certain piece of paper, cardboard or plastic can come in very handy. In my case, I can think of licenses and certifications that have laid dormant for twenty years suddenly turn out to be very useful

Thanks to the Patriot Act and RealID, you pretty much have to have a driver's license, state issued ID or a passport *and* something to prove you have a bank account. So I have a driver's license and a bank account, and I'll be adding a passport. I have spent a fair chunk of time over the last 2 years dealing with the wonders of those two laws, and I don't *ever* want to deal with them again.

(what I really want is for them to be overturned by Congress, but that could take a while)

Why don't you just get the TX photo ID card instead? The bank will accept it.

Rent a car...need a DL
Purchase a Plane Ticket? Passport. The state I live in has crappy DL's that scuff up in a few months if you keep them in your wallet. I have not been allowed on an airplane because of it, so now I carry my passport as a primary form of ID when flying.

thats unfortunately seems to be how it is regarded!

I heard President Obama intends to push for a reversal of RealID and to nullify the patriot act
