Bikes: A hand-me-down Trek 9700, plus there's a Santana tandem in my garage, and some kid's bikes

I started as a stoker on a tandem, but that was a once-in-a-while thing. I enjoyed it, and thought maybe it would be good exercise to ride on my own every now and then.

Now the truth is simple...

I'm addicted.

In America, if it's fun, then there must be something wrong with it.

"It's fun" makes it sound like a toy, not a serious mode of transport.

Plus, it can't be fun; you get all sweaty and when it rains you get welt and maybe melt or something.

Why don't you just let me give you a ride?

/sorry.

It started out as a way to help control blood pressure. It worked

Now I ride because when I am on my bike I dont even THINK about things like work, dirty dishes, rent, what to wear, bill collectors, the latest iGadgets....any of that crap.
I feel free and no one can touch me. To me, that is what life has become about. Ill never get off this bicycle....voluntarily

Okay here it comes - I ride a bike because I like it.

Ive been doing it since I was 6 yrs old. I enjoy the exercise and the slower pace. But I don't have any more pious motives than that. I realize these aren't satisfyingly esoteric reasons, and they don't meet today's modern need for moralistic agendas.
No whales are saved, no oil spills prevented, no trans-fats avoided for my pedaling.

In short, I don't do it to save the planet - I do it because I enjoy it.

I like being active instead of sedentary while I get around town.
Cycling fits my budget a lot better than maintaining a car.
I live within 10km of everything I need/do in my daily life.
I want to have a lighter ecological footprint.
I hate feeling dependent on something as 'heavy' (financially, actual weight wise, fossil fuel consumption wise) as a car.
I love the feeling of cycling, and I find it always puts me into a good mood even if I am cranky.
I love sharing that feeling with my children, who also enjoy the feeling of cycling immensely. My 2 year old even napless and exhausted, will sit happily and quietly in her baby seat watching the world go by and saying, 'Let's go fast Mom!'

Fun
Flexibility (time and route)
Freedom of movement
Independence from unreliable mass transit
In my case it's also faster than mass transit
Exercise
To be different
OK, a bit for the Mother Earth as well
