International Car Free Day
Car Free Day Canada
I'm kind of surprised this isn't getting much attention on this site. Time to get out and celebrate car free day around the world. Some cities are fully participating, like Montreal, which has blocked off many roads downtown until 3:30 PM.
If you are in a city that isn't celebrating, may I suggest everybody hop on your bikes tonight and go for a ride and try to spread the word.

In Montreal they are blocking off one downtown area about 0.5 sq km and a similar area just out of downtown. These areas are not being blocked during the rush hours, so the whole thing seems rather pathetic to me. For this to be effective they should block most of the streets to cars and make the busses and trains free for the day.

[rant on]
International Car Day my ass. Toronto didn't do squat and in fact, I'm convinced there were even *MORE* cars on the road yesterday. It frustrates me to no end that this city seems to be encouraging more people to drive! The TTC and GO transits are overflowing, underfunded while highways are getting more money to expand more to "handle more cars" (Ya. Right. More people just go on those highways).
Toronto claims they "weren't prepared" for International Car Free Day and will do something next year. I won't be holding my breath (especially with all the pollution I get to suck up)
[/rant off]
And how was your day?

It was almost car free for me because most of my commute is either on bike paths or roads with very little traffic. I think car-free is not having to hassle with other cars.

The day itself is a joke. The good side is the debate it has created about road design to better accomodate bikes, mass transportation, car pollution, etc. It's not much, but better than nothing IMO.
