Famous carfree people
Have you heard of famous carfree people?
NPR's Scott Simon comes to mind. He said he grew up in the big city and never learned to drive. I believe his late friend and colleague Daniel Shorr was also carfree for his entire 90 years of life.

I don't know that he's completely car free, but David Byrne (of the talking heads) is a big proponent of cycling and car-lite at the very least.

The few billion people that lived before 1900 or so.Every President before William Mckinley?
I don't know if Willy owned a car but he was the first President to ride in a car.
I think John Madden(of football fame) has not driven in a long time.He may have driven in his playing days.

I recall that Ray Bradbury doesn't drive or ride in automobiles, but his wikipedia entry does not confirm this. I'm car light, but not famous :-)

Meyer Hillman, the British environmentalist think-tank-type guy, is car-free and goes everywhere by bike or public transportation, and has done so for many decades.

As I recall, in a video interview, maybe the Ken Burns baseball series, Yogi Berra said that he used to take the train to Yankees games when he was a player.

I know he doesn't drive. But I believe he does accept rides.

Da Vinci comes to mind, although he tried to fly...
Seriously though, Issac Asimov, I'm not sure, but he learned to drive late in his life and never enjoyed it, and he probably never owned a car. However, he never learned to ride a bicycle either.

I don't think you count as "car-free" if you have a chauffeur.

MORRISSEY "used" to not drive. He did not have a license until well into his 30's ( I think?) Now...however, he has been seeing driving a BMW in Los Angeles....

Byrne is carfree. He takes a bike on tour with him and rides in all the cities he visits. I highly reccommend his book called "Bicycle Diaries."

Re: Madden...
From the commentary other sportscasters give, if you work with Madden, you travel with Madden. That means the entire camera crew, the other sportscasters, and all the support people are taking a bus or three instead of an airline flight. While it's not stuffing everyone on bicycles, it's definitely a less polluting method of travel than stuffing everyone in an airliner.
As far as I know, we're still counting mass transit as being car free, so I think we can give Madden a pass.

I believe the late actress Brittany Murphy did not drive. Also, Albert Einstein (sp) did not drive either. There's a very famous quote about him somewhere about the bicycle.

The Amish people; and according to the figures I can find that is somewhere around 250,000. A few orders do allow automobile use, but they are in the minority less than 8k.

Jared Diamond is pretty car light. I think his car's engine is under powered enough that I could out-sprint him from light to light in the city. On the other hand, he called it his pride and joy among mechanical possessions.
I've been told (by a film history professor) that Alfred Hitchcock never learned to drive because he was so terrified of the police. You'll notice in this movies that whenever things are so bad that it seems they couldn't possibly get any worse, the police always show up, and things really go to hell. They're always shot at odd angles through unusually lenses, giving them a monster's perspective over a child.
And: "It's deja vu, all over again."
