Portland store has more bike parking than car parking

When reading a thread that Ekdog started about trains, I noticed this nice article on bicycle parking.

Portland store has more bike parking than car parking.

A sign of intelligent life? An advanced civilization in Oregon?

My local grocery store has 8 spots for bikes and at least 100 for cars. On a number of occasions the 8 spots were full.

I would shop there, our grocery store has 150 parking spaces for cars and none for bikes, when I asked about it I was told it wasn't required by zoning codes so they weren't planning on putting any in.

Aaron, you should explain to them that they can purchase a good bike corral for less than $500 and remind them of the cost of getting one new customer in their door. If bike parking gets them one new customer -- ie, you! -- the corral has paid for itself.

It is in a strip mall in the boondocks...AFAIK there are only two of us that regularly ride bikes to the store. The next closest store is about 7 miles away and happens to be the same brand of store. They are well aware of the fact that 99.99999% of their customers drive to the store.

I've taken to walking my bikes into stores without bike parking. One has asked that I not do that. Another hasn't said a word.

There's a new supposedly hip store in my little town in L.A. that has more parking for hybrid cars than bicycles.L.A.'s version of thinking green....

I do that all the time. One store asked me to take the bike outside. I said "Fine, but I'm going with it and won't be back."
