No tomato sauce? Might be the right moment to try a besciamella sauce.

I make my sauce up from canned stuff. I use:

15oz can tomato sauce (Hunts)
6oz can tomato paste (Hunts)
1-tsp basil (crushed)
1-tsp oregano (crushed)
1-tbsp garlic powder
1-tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1-tbsp Olive Oil

Toss it in a pan and heat it up. I like it because I can keep canned stuff for quite a while. We use this for pizza or pasta.

  1. Saute some vegetables (onions, mushrooms and green pepper are a tasty combination) in a little olive oil.
  2. Add a glass of white wine and let it boil until about half of the wine has evaporated.
  3. Stir in a couple teaspoons of cold butter.
  4. Add the hot pasta and garnish with good grated cheese. If it's too thick, add some of the hot pasta cooking water.
  5. Herbs, a few nuts, raisins, or dried fruit are some other good garnishes.

Hmmm, apparently when it's 9 degrees out and you drop your last jar of tomato sauce on the floor it is time to get creative, not suffer through the cold!

Adaptability + ingenuity = successful carfree existence.

There's also the issue of being prepared too. Running out of bread is pretty common. But if you have some flour stockpiled, bread is never too far off. Sometimes it's easier to whip up a quick loaf rather than making a trip through rough weather.

But this goes for any mode of transportation. Going out to start up a car in sub zero weather is no treat either.

subzero? You been -0*C...right? :D

I seldom buy bread, homemade is much, much better.

We always have a back supply of food. If all the grocery stores in the world were to shut down tomorrow we would still be eating for the next month on the stuff we have stashed. Probably would get pretty monotonous towards the end, but at least we would be eating.

Not me. I'm more like the OP, just enough in the pantry for a day or two--or less.
