Giving Car Free

With the seasons of conspicuous consumption fast approaching it's time to consider the alternative Christmas and New Year gift possibilities.

A couple of years back they started a Chris Kindle (aka Secret Santa in U.S.) in my workplace and I made my own gift using some simple craft shop items. First I printed a rather fetching photo of myself proudly posing with my bike at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet in France, then downloaded a calendar for the upcoming year from a free website. With some card, press-on lettering and glue I had a ready made cycling calendar. The 'gift' caused much merriment but was used throughout the following year and I've maintained the DIY cycling calendar tradition up till now.

There's been a 300% increase in cycle commuting amoung my colleagues over the period. I can't claim my frugal subversion of the car culture was responsible but it may have helped.

Any other ideas on how to promote LCF while saving a few $/€/£ etc?

A nice gift for cyclists at this time of year is a blinkie. I picked up one of those from someone earlier this year and left it on the back of my trailer. Even if your friends have good lighting systems, an extra backup light is usually welcome.

If you have a lot of blinkies, you can decorate your bike with them for the holidays.

I use battery-powered Christmas lights. People always seem to like that.

The three wise men would never have been able to follow the star to Bethlehem with all the light pollution around today.

The more lights you turn on the less you see.

I see a lot of this in the cycling community. There seems to be a race to add yet more battery operated, eye killing light sources. Often it just blinds on-coming traffic.. since frequently it is bright, but not properly focused.

I have battery powered twinkle lights that I put in a small wreath that I mount to the front of the bike.

I also get a case of inexpensive safety vests to hand out to ninja riders.

I second this option, as well as the small blinky tail lights.
