I know this isn't cycling related...

This is incredible: so simple, yet the effects are huge. It's also a great example of refraction. I'm going to use this video in my 8th grade class when we discuss the behaviors of light.

Maybe I'm confused, but didn't we already have a thread about this? Anyhow, it's a great idea and a good little film.

I'm not sure, my ex sent me a link to it. But I don't remember it here.

55 watt bulb? That's pretty cool. Although I imagine that bottle has to be replaced every 6 months or so.

Why? I thought that the plastic will last for centuries and they add bleach to the water to keep it from clouding up.

The only issue I see is how they waterproof the join between the roofing and the bottle, but I suppose they'd be celebrating rainfall, so a leak that big would be worth overlooking.

Not a new idea.

Seems like it originated in Brazil around 2002.

In this video they use 35mm film cans over the screw top to protect them from the sun.

I thought the bottles would cloud over in the sunlight and then leak. But it might last a while according to this source

[breakdown rate.....]
3. “Pocket Guide to Marine Debris,” The Ocean Conservancy, 2004*
Paper towel – 2-4 weeks; Orange or banana peel- 2-5 weeks; Newspaper- 6 weeks; Apple core- 2 months ; Waxed milk carton- 3 months; Plywood- 1-3 years; Wool sock- 1-5 years; Cigarette filter- 1-50 years; Plastic Bag- 10-20 years; Plastic film canister- 20-30 years ; Nylon Fabric- 30-40 years; Leather- 50 years; Tin can- 50 years; Foamed plastic cup- 50 years; Rubber boat sole- 50-80 years; Foamed plastic buoy- 80 years; Aluminium can- 80-200 year ; Disposable diapers- 450 years; Plastic beverage bottles- 450 year; Plastic beverage bottles- 450 year; Monofilament fishing line- 600 years; Glass Bottle- 1,000,000 years.
Even if it doesn't last 450 years, it'll last longer than the average light bulb.

I know a better experiment about refraction, but it for adults only.It involves flashlights and saline/silicone filled bags......
