Insurance for the almost free

I'm really trying to be car free, but I'm reluctant until I see how I handle the winter. Not to mention I don't have any way to transport anything larger...I live in a 2nd floor apartment and I don't have space to store a trailer.

But I maybe drive like 2-3 times month and I pay much more for insurance than I do even for gas. I talked with my insurance carrier and they put me on a low mileage plan, but it's still crazy to pay as much as I do for as little usage.

Any one else the same and have any experience?

The less you drive the more you have to pay per kilometre or per mile. Some of the costs of vehicle ownership are pretty much fixed.

I'm not sure how it works in Colorado. Are you able to drop some parts of the coverage? For instance, if you've got collision and comprehensive coverage, do you need comprehensive or would collision alone be sufficient? This is a matter to discuss with your insurance agent.

As far as not being able to store a bike trailer, have a look at the Burley Flatbed. You can fold down the hitch and remove the wheels. Then it will store quite comfortably in the back of a closet.

You could get a small storage garage too. That would work nicely.

Can I ask what you were paying before on insurance and what you pay now with low mileage insurance?

The Burley Travoy is another trailer that collapses down for storage that gets good reviews.

Car insurance can only be reduced down so far and then you are stuck. One thing I have always been careful of is taking insurance to the bare minimums. In North Carolina if you get the bare minimum you will be under insured for liability. Cause one wreck and minimum insurance won't come close to covering the costs, opening you up to civil suits.

Last year, Progressive told my wife and I to go with the minimum and then make sure we had a good umbrella policy.

We eventually moved the car to Canada and that seemed to solve the problem here.

Don't have room to store a trailer? Mine folds up and goes under the bed. Think about it! :)

We have a pretty decent umbrella policy, however I am loathe to reduce car insurance and depend on the homeowner's umbrella policy. About the first time you get slapped with a civil suit and they go against your umbrella policy is about the time you are going to find out that you will become uninsured, because no one will want to write you a policy. We have had several go arounds with the insurance companies over a specific piece of property that we own, they did not want to insure it, no way no how. We finally got a bare bones policy for it with a huge deductible. If something happens we better hope for total destruction so we get a full payout.

My old house mate has a cadillac that he drove maybe once or twice a month. Because it was from 1986 and he barely drove it he was able to get it insured as a collectors car which is apparently way cheaper.
