The ones who get me will understand why I prefer walking and cycling to driving. The ones who really get me will also feel the same way. I'm not really interested in the ones who don't at least try to understand me. Pursuing anything with them would be a waste of my time and theirs.

car-free lady here weighing in.

Most major life-changes are going to change you're attractiveness, both ways. Like if you got a mowhawk, sure you'd be unattractive to some ladies, but now a new group of mowhawk-lovin' ladies just opened up. Personally, a boyfriend who has the ability to teach me stuff about my bike, and go on long rides with me would be a huge bonus. In the city I live in, there really is no *need* for a car, and there's always rentals for the occasional weekend-get-away. If I lived in my old hometown, I wouldn't be able to be car-free, it would likely be important that any BF have some sort of transportation...depending on how much I liked them...

So I guess as long as it doesn't impact your ability to get around, being car-free is just fine. You just got to find the right woman. And who would want to date a materialistic person, anyway? I know a few guys who have their balls attached to their cars, they are NOT dating material.

That must be excruciating.

Edited to add: I've done a little research: https://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...=bumper%20nuts Is this a common practice?

Sadly, yes. At least around here. None of the women I'm acquainted with would ever be seen in a vehicle with those attached, so I'm not sure what purpose they serve.

If I was single again (well that will never happen I hope) I would only date a woman that rides a bike. I find women riding Dutch bike or steel road bike more sexy than Kim Kardashian types.

In some areas of the country, we have a few rednecks around here that do . It has been outlawed in some locales, NJ comes to mind.

I find that certain things serve as good social filters to weed out superficial people. Full beards are one. Living car free is another. Anyone who blows you off for not having a car wasn't worth your time in the first place.

Other good social filters to weed out the "losers" who consider such factors important are cleanliness, personal grooming, a sense of self worth, motivation to live above poverty level and a coherent adult vocabulary.

Unless someone is desperate and dateless, there will likely be several criteria used to determine if a person is suitable for dating purposes. I can't imagine anyone using one's choice of transportation as the sole factor.

Do you equate those qualities with not owning a motor car?

No. But I believe these qualities might be closely associated with "losers" who blame their low self-esteem and perceived low social status on everybody else in society's failure to appreciate unique/nonconforming/counterculture lifestyle "qualities."

The "full beard bit" previously mentioned is no doubt closely associated with recumbents which certainly would be a social filter anywhere.

About nine years ago, I went on a blind date and we both showed up by bicycle. The bicycles were probably a significant contributing factor to the fact that I have not been on a date with anyone else since.

Do men also discriminate against car-free women when it comes to dating? Just curious.

Not much of a story, really. The first time we spent the night together was the night I taught him how to build a wheel. We've been together ever since. Lucky me, because only another cyclist could put up with me!

Oh.
Teasing out a good story would be so, so hard given the obvious backdrop...

Not likely, unless the man is dependent on, or expecting someone else to provide transportation for his dating activities. In some places like NYC, taxicabs might meet that need.

Not in my experience. Body fat percentage seems to be the primary source of discrimination against women when it comes to dating.

I would think age would rank up there too for the more discriminating males.
