I think 7 billion people are going to have a significant effect on the planet no matter what. The worker bees of the world - a category in which I include myself in spite of my well-developed and deliberately nurtured slacker tendencies - can help us figure out a way to enjoy our manmade toys and conveniences without destroying our environment and ourselves in the process. At least, that is what I tell myself when I am feeling optimistic.

The environment would do better if we all slacked more.
But quality slacking is the key. Read. Hike. Bike. Learn. Waste time on BF.

None of them are people that I put on this Earth. So I feel no guilt.

But you're one of them! Good thing you're car-light and a conscientious citizen.

It's not the 7 billion people... but more likely the 1 billion who want to live in a McMansion and drive an Escalade. That'll really bring your environment down in a hurry.

I think the most important thing is that my damage ends with me, because I'm child free. I have one friend in her 90's with no children. Her sister, however, has 100 living descendents. The difference that makes on the Earth is incalculable.

Do you find that people generally regard your choice to refrain from breeding as something unspeakably awful? I made the same choice at 15 and have never regretted it (I'm 57 now) but almost everyone who discovers that it was a deliberate decision is horrified. I'm wondering if things are similar for you, or if people don't get so weirded out because you're a man.

I'm 'child light', I suppose, as I've only engendered one son.

Many people have told me if they could start over they would never have kids. They all love their children dearly, but wouldn't take that road a second time if they could get a second chance. Others told me "I never even THOUGHT about not having kids". Those folks would probably do it again as they see having children as just a part of life and are most likely to be saddened that I never had any.

Well, the subject has never come up.

And it wasn't so much a deliberate decision as circumstance. Turns out my ex forgot to tell me a few things before our wedding and needed a hysterectomy about a year after we got married. So, I had to decide between preferences and commitments. The marriage ended 17 years later at her request.

And along with that, does it matter if your vision of success does not measure up to the standards set by mainstream society?
In part, to me it is defined as one being "content, self sufficient and considerate".

Let's all work together.
