Reoccurring Dream

I've been bicycle commuting for almost 15 years now and just recently I've started to have this dream where I'm riding along and suddenly I hear footsteps getting closer and as I glance over my should I see that someone was charging my bike from the side but missed me by about a foot. Anyone else have a similar dream or am I dealing with a unique anxiety here?

Nope. Never had a dream like that. Have you had some close calls with motorists?

I keep dreaming I'm on 1200K randonnees. If I'm feeling quite fit in my awake life, I do well on the 1200K in the dream. If I'm not well and/or not fit in my awake life, I don't do very well on the 1200K in the dream.

I have dreams where I am riding a bike, and dreams where I am being chased. I have lots of other dreams too. I wouldn't worry about it. I've noticed that sometimes I don't take the steps that could end the chasing dream, so I have come to think that at some level, my brain finds the chasing dream fun and allows it to go on.

What happens after they miss you?

There are two versions: 1) I speed away, 2) I slow down a little ways down the road to look over my shoulder and see what the hell it was about and the guy takes up running after me again so I bust out of there, no looking back!

My recurrent cycling dream (over 20 years ago) was commuting to work for an important meeting and realizing how far I still had to go. Probably a variant of the paradigmatic college dream of showing up late (unprepared) for a class or exam.

BTW, that college dream even now compels me never to come late to any kind of lecture.

That college dream reminds me I don't want to go back to college...

Seems to have little to do with living car free. Hardly related to bicycles either.

Do you ever discuss car-free living or is criticizing others your only stock and store?

You should visit a gypsy fortune teller, she can look into her crystal ball and tell you exactly what your dreams mean.

It is anxiety.

I view alot of "Bike Messenger" videos on YouTube and there is a common feeling among all the messengers. A number of them state it takes quite a while to wind down at the end of the day because of all the close calls. Sometimes they have trouble sleeping at night because of the stress.

It maybe time to take the bus for a while.

We don't talk much about living car free or car light in this forum anymore. Just recently there was a thread going chatting about the price of fuel and asking for suggestions regarding the purchase of an SUV. I'm not sure there are very many people in this little subforum who even own bicycles let alone use them. They certainly don't talk much about their bicycles and cycling.

It's good to see that someone is, at least, dreaming about riding a bicycle.

I never had a dream like this, but it did happen in real life. A guy on foot charged out at me from behind a bush. I was able to swerve away from him. Then I saw his friend on a bike start chasing after me. After a pretty scary 4-5 block chase I was able to get away from him.

Most of my dreams about bikes have to do with a flying bicycle,

I think that gas prices have a lot to do with being carfree for many individuals. People on this forum often mention it as a main reason that they are carfree. Does that mean they will buy a car if gas prices go down? I think that's an interesting question, and that's why I asked it.

If it isn't of interest to you, you don't have to open the thread. Also, if you find it to be boring, why have you brought it up again on a thread where it is totally off-topic? Or is this post just a troll?

Not boring ... hilarious and ironic ... but not boring.

I think the lines of on-topic and off-topic have blurred a long time ago in this forum. Relax and go with the flow.

To me, dreaming about riding a bike is certainly a part of living car free.

Oh look, the forum police! Everybody run! Why do you bother with reading/responding to this? seems like such a waste of your time.

Anyway, as someone who rides his bike most places, dreams about a fear of riding your bike most places seem right on topic to me. If you don't like it, don't click on it. Or report it to an admin and leave the rest of us alone.

Carfree living is the only subtopic I participate in around here anymore, but there has been so much bickering about stupid s&$t like this in the past few years that it is losing its appeal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the last time you posted December 3, 2013 ... almost a year ago?

A suggestion ... if you think this forum is losing its appeal, then how about participating more frequently in any threads you do like.

Sounds about right. I still read frequently, daily almost, but if you are into research check out how many of the threads I participated in back then devolved in similar ways.

The thing is, we need more people who actually cycle in this forum ... and it sounds like you do.

So I'd encourage you to write about your commutes this week (and another cycling you do) in this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/living-car...alk-today.html

And if you've taken a car-free holiday recently, tell us about that. Go through the threads on the last few pages and join in.

This from a person who screams to high heavens and demands that the moderators delete any and all threads where mention is made of car-free living and its potential as a solution for problems such as catastrophic climate change, peak oil or the death toll on our highways!

If only you would practise what you preach!

Also, you might have gotten a better response if you had posted this in General Cycling.

Do you mean people who do real cycling tours and not those who do large parts of their "world cycling tours" in hired cars?

I see you're attempting to spread lies again.

When was the last time you rode a bicycle? In real life.
