Oh man...went from 190 to 240 after hanging the bike up. Now I am going through and prepping the bike to get back out on the road. The only way I found my weight staying in control was with regular exercise. Dieting alone does little for me...stubborn metabolism I guess. Anyway, looking to shed 50 pounds by summer's end.

Another reply to self post - latest weight is down to 150. Still want to knock off about 30 lbs. When I'm done training for an upcoming half marathon I'm going to start Matt Fitzgerald's Racing Weight Quick-Start plan. I already use his DQS for eating, and started seeing awesome gains in my performance.

Updating everything on my computer is not a mistake. It's a deliberate choice. And I don't have to remember everything in order to enter it at the end of the day ... I enter as I go. I have a computer near me just about every minute of the day. A couple hours ago, I entered a mid-morning snack, and now I'm about to enter lunch.
I have been logging steadily for 32 days now, and have lost just a touch over 5 kg.

I weighed nearly 300 lbs out of high school due to bad habits and not being properly informed on nutrition. I sought out the information and designed my own way out of despair. It took me about 3-4 years to lose the weight. I am now about 170lbs and have started living life in the past few years I go up to 190lbs now and then but nothing over 200. I've kept the weight off for about 10 years now.

Roody, thanks for your comments. I had grown up eating fast food and was literally having it 2 or 3 times per day. subway, mdconalds, burger king, pizza hut and a ton of other fast food places were all near my house and that is what i would eat. I never did grocery shopping for YEARS in my teens and early-mid 20s!!!! Not to mention drinking at least a 2-liter bottle of soda per day, 1 or 2 starbucks venti frapuccinos PER DAY, numerous deserts and countless grams of sugar PER DAY. Growing up, I simply didn't know better. We learned about health in school but as a kid, I just assumed 'I am fat and I can't do anything about it.'
It got to the point where I was made fun of in high school and had a very tiny group of friends that I trusted. I saw other people leading more 'fun' lives and I said you know what, I'm going to do the same thing. It was a challenge for me and I fell off the wagon countless times. My father taught me to never give up which is why I always got right back on.
What I learned: the importance of water, vegetables and fruits. I had problems with self control and when I wanted meat, I bought a mcdonalds or burger king burger. There is nothing wrong with meat but in my case, I never cooked meat - i ALWAYS bought fast food. So the one challenge I gave myself was to give up meat. I'm not saying that giving up meat helped me lose weight but that meant that I wasn't going to fast food places and ordering combos (burger, fries and a coke not to mention a desert of course!). I gave up meat (i ate only eggs and seafood/salmon/tuna/etc) for a total of 13 or so years and it really wasn't too tough honestly. Just in the past year, i am back to eating everything. But the one thing that amazed me was how "light and efficient" my body felt when I ate eggs/vegetables. When I eat meat, it takes longer to digest and it makes my body feel sluggish overall.
I think the caffeine addiction also prevented my brain from truly "absorbing" or "understanding" what the fast food/chemicals were doing to my body. Like, I was caffeinated but never really truly understood the consequences of my actions. I started limiting my intake and now have a cup of coffee in the mornings and maybe a can of diet coke with meals (1 or 2x a week only). When i gave up the caffeine and started eating cleanly, I truly FELT how different my body was reacting to different foods. this sensitivity to what food was doing to my body quickly became the reason i started eating more cleanly. (this is the single most important thing i learned. just wanted to highlight it haha) I never ate vegetables until I turned 18. I would always remove all veggies from my burgers and maybe 1x a week i would eat vegetables. looking back, i feel so sorry for myself for not having the knowledge to do something sooner but at the same time, with maturity, my thoughts and motivations became more actionable and achievable.
as for exercise, i simply walked more to lose the weight. i would work long hours in my 20s and sit all day but then i started using the treadmill at the gym at work. I went from walking a mile in 23 minutes to running about a 10 minute mile which is good enough for me. walking was the best - i would put on a tv show on a laptop and watch it while on the treadmill. i would walk 4 miles at a time and i would force myself to do it in 1 hour (15 minute/mile). this was super low impact for me and allowed me to exercise nearly every single day without being sore/needing recovery time between workouts.
I lost the weight in my mid twenties and i am 35 now. I recall going to the doctor at maybe age 24 and i was at the risk of becoming diabetic, i had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. aside from that, the effect on my mind was the most painful....
Sorry for the rant/being all over the place. I should collect my thoughts and post them in a more structured way

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I liked the Orange Cream Cooler at Olga's Kitchen until it became too much cream and not enough orange. Now Arby's has an Orange Cream Shake, but it has approximately the same flaw as Olga's Cooler. I don't currently have a favorite ride drink. The backup option is a frozen yogurt or ice cream cone, but IKEA did not have it when I was there yesterday.

Thanks again Roody. It certainly does factor in although I use public transportation more than biking to places which means more walking. I got into biking about 5 years ago for the health benefits and to be out and about after being stuck in an office for 8-12 hour days! I try to ride as often as i can now even though it's less often than i'd like it to be haha I plan to ride more this summer to hopefully shed the 20lbs i've put on in the winter!

I've been burning up the calories with 15-20 miles rides daily, but still hovering right around 218 with a round belly. I have a sneaking suspicion 'boredom snacking' in the evening has a direct correlation. I still have my eye on 180. Ah, what the heck, I'm enjoying life.

Of course, you can continue to eat the same amount but increase activity/exercise by that 200 calories a day. Unfortunately, 200 calories is a hell of a lot of extra pedaling!
(The numbers I mentioned are for illustration only, not exact figures.)

Maybe you are confronting one of the annoying realities of weight l%, Heart Rate oss. As you get lighter, you are basically working less hard to haul your own weight around. Since work is equivalent to calories, the lighter you are, the fewer calories you can consume and still lose weight. When you weighed 250#, you maybe lost weight eating 1,600 calories a day. At 218#, you might need to cut back to 1,400 calories.
Thursday, however, I rode with a friend who has a calorie counter. 480 burned on a 13mi hilly ride. Another 20.5 today (flat) so I'm still burning calories. At 69 years of age I'm more concerned with enjoying life than a svelt figure, as long as I eat (mostly) healthy. The Sparks Fire Dept. stopped by today at the Senior Center and my vitals were good (right after a 17mi ride): BP 118/76, Oxy 95%, Heart rate 81.
I'd like to get down to 200 by the end of summer, but if I don't, c'est la vie.

If it's to being fat or gaining weight, that be my pooooorest gain.
I CAN'T GAIN IT.
I've received the experience from other cyclists: of their (cycle) driving attitude problems against ME. Because they be jealous of MY Body profile; hence my body weight. You cyclists that drive cars - know what retaliation I be talking about.

I see a lot of people riding bikes that are somewhat overweight,
I think its a great thing they are being active,
I find it somewhat silly that they stuff themselves in tight biking clothing lol

Simple matter of comfort. A chamois makes riding distance easier on the rear regardless of how much the rider weighs. I am overweight, though have not always been and am working on it. I wear a bib when riding.

At 6'2" I capped out at 195 in law school since it was a five minute ride from my home.
Riding to work on a cross bike got me down to a reliable 188 or so.
Switching over to a cargo bike and pedaling my kids to school got me down to a reliable 180.
I'm shooting for 165 (my lowest adult weight, reached by biking to undergrad in the Texas summers), but that would require pretty drastic changes in diet, and all of my weight loss up until this point has been through increase in exercise rather than through dietary restrictions. We'll see if I can commit to that. I'm in my mid thirties now and realizing the differences between dropping to 165 in my early 20s and attempting the same when nearing middle age.

Half marathon went well - my firm goal was 2:30 and my stretch goal was 2:15. I did it in 2:20:22, so I made the first but not second goal. I have another half in September, and I'm going to aim for 2:15 firm. But it's a trail race, which I've never done before, so that will be interesting.

You must be downright skinny! I'm 5'9" 220lbs and that's down from 270lbs. I seem to reach 218 then can't go any further. 180 is my goal but that's only IF it happens. Not too worried about it. Cycling an average of 18 miles a day (bike or trike) and eating a lot of salads. I think I was born a fire plug an that's just that.

Rode the (Allez) today but met a guy on a Greenspeed trike, custom built for when he was over 400lbs. He's lost 130lbs tricycling and he's still overly large. Makes my 73lbs look paltry. Just goes to show perseverance pays off.
