  • 1 small onion,
  • 1/2 bell pepper, and
  • 1 or 2 cloves garlic, minced

I often season with:
1 tsp. brown sugar
2 tsp. cider vinegar
1 tsp. sriracha sauce

Alternatively, I replace those seasonings with 1 small tomato, chopped and 1. jalapeno, finely chopped. Or for a French twist, I replace with 1 Tbsp. low salt chicken broth, 1 extra clove garlic, and a sprig of thyme.

According to myfitnesspal.com, this recipe has 197 calories per serving, 27 grams carbs, 7 grams fiber, and only 116 mg sodium. Sometime I'm going to try it with the daikon.
I gave this a try. Added a zucchini. Delicious! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, zucchini's great too. Lots of vegetables taste good when prepared as a hash. If you want more carbs after a bike ride, throw in a grated potato or some leftover rice.

This is an interesting site:

12 July 2012 - Where are you on the global fat scale?
BBC News - Where are you on the global fat scale?

Of me, it says ...
You have a lower BMI than 89% of females aged 45-59 in your country.

You have a lower BMI than 79% of females aged 45-59 in the world.

You're most like someone from Vietnam.

The problem with BMI is that it can't distinguish between fat loss or muscle loss.

For me, it isn't important to compare my weight to other people in Vietnam or wherever. Am I happy where I'm at? Is my doctor happy where I'm at?

When I get down to my "ideal" body mass, I actually feel a little too thin. I like to be about 10 pounds over that ideal weight. For me, both my subjective body image and some kind of physical set point are as important as the scales.

Good point Roody. It's much more important to be happy with yourself rather than fit into someone elses mold.
I'll most likely never see my "target weight" of 180lbs. Age 70, riding an average of 20 mi/day, I constantly hover between 220-225. Once I started new meds last year for RA the weight loss went out the door.
I did manage to find 4X and 5X (Asian sizes) bib shorts and jerseys on
ebay (good quality) for about $20 apiece.
Work on it, but be happy with yourself.

There are alternatives that account for that. But at a price. Such as measuring the volume of water your body displaces. Requires suitable tooling.

One idea is that it's good to be a few pounds over "ideal" body weight when one is in their 60s or early 70s. This extra weight might provide a cushion against the debilitating weight loss that sometimes occurs when one gets a little older.

Ha ha ha - that's good to know (and I agree). Definitely not a problem here. According to the "charts" at 5'9" I should be 165 lbs. I'd look positively anorexic at that weight. I was 170lbs at age 21 when I got out of the Navy. I felt good in my 40s-50's at 180. 220 is a little heavy (BMI is way up) but I seem to carry it well. I still have a "goal weight" of 180, but if I don't get there - meh. I would like to slim down to 200 but I'm not going to bust my butt getting there. I'm reasonably healthy for an old duffer (70).

55 and I don't worry about the BMI, which says I'm obese at 210. I eat healthy and keep hiking/cycling. I figure my body knows where my weight needs to be.

And yes, working in a hospital, everyday I see people my age crippled or dying from entirely preventable causes. Eat healthy, don't smoke, minimal alcohol and keep moving seem to be the keys to health.

You should do a lot of squats and stuff to carry me I think. I think my bikes and I are about even.

When I could run (up till last year), I could keep to a 30-inch waist. My knee blew out and now I have only cycling and walking, so I have a 32-inch waist, and am not terribly pleased about it. With only a 90-day cycling season up here, I just have to cut calories.

Ha! I was ecstatic when I went from a 46 to a 42 waist. Trying to find bike apparel in 4-5X (Asian -2-3X US) on ebay is tuff. Them's tiny people. Of course once you're over 60 (I'm 70) it's even harder to slim down. I'll trade ya'

You deserve a lot of credit, Grey. If I do a little math, here, if I had 1/4 of your self-discipline, I would get my "expansion joint" to recede to it's former size.

I lost 73lbs cycling (18 of that twice). But that was over a period of about 2 years, cycling most of the year round (weather permitting). Now it's mostly a matter of Battling the Bulge and maintaining the status quo (iow: working hard not to get fatter). But it's a labor of love. Cycling is my exercise and passion, it's what gets me out of bed in the morning.

No, never. I have weighed generally between 154 and 185 pounds through my adult life depending upon what activity I was engaged in at the time. I am 5'11", I am 62 yo now, resting pulse 40 BPM and I currently weigh 170 pounds. I can destroy people who are good swimmers that are half my age. I am still relatively fast on a bicycle though I never fully recovered from the shattered femur now nearly six years ago. I would never allow myself to get overweight. I look good up to around 185, beyond that love handles start appearing. Below 170 I start looking rather boney. During my marathon period I went as low as maybe 148 but I was emaciated looking and did not feel good. I love my skinny jeans .

I've never had a pair of "skinny" jeans, I'm just not built that way (sigh). Generally I tend to look for "one size fits fat". Actually I'm more "hefty" than fat.

I saw a guy on a road bike (skinny tires) at speed (passed me @14mph) that looked like a hippo. His thighs were the size of my belly. He had to weigh 360 or more. HUGE. What matters is being out there and riding.

I am 51 now at about 140lbs. I over exerted myself in an attempt to get back to my prefered crazy 134 and got a viral kidney infection. Now these past 5 weeks I can hardly get out of bed and need a zimmer frame!
There may be something to be said for not overdoing it

Fortunately I am okay once on my bike. Put me back on my bike.

Positive thoughts to you TimTak. I can't walk a mile (without being in horrible pain) but I can ride 20+ miles.
