It's 12:20 A.M. and it's minus 21 degrees Fahrenheit in East Helena Montana. It will be even colder by the early morning work commute. Luckily I don't have a job to force me to go out tomorrow. This cold blast is probably moving Eastward as they usually do. Maybe it won't if you're lucky. Get ready just in case.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
-22C here tonight... it has warmed up a little.
Had to fix a broken door today at the co-op and that was a little brutal to have to stand in the wind and deal with freezing cold pieces of metal.

It's -1F (-18C) here right now. Our 18th night in 2014 with low temp below zero Fahrenheit. Probably our 80th or 90th night in a row with low temp below zero Celsius.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
We weren't ready for the long stretch of warm weather we saw in January... after getting epic amounts of snow in December that melted and the roads are still an unholy mess in many places.
Where they are clear you could make some good time on a bike save for the fact it is -25C and the wind chill is nasty.

Yeah, they'd love to get some big snowfalls in the mountains of California, where the drought is starting to get scary. It's only a matter of time before they try to come after our Great Lakes water.

That's one of the reasons I left CA years ago. It was only a matter of time. The water table in the Coachella Valley was dropping like a rock and no one seemed to notice. There was a period of 15 months without a drop of rain. No one talked about water conservation but they kept the golf courses green.

Anyone else enjoy a sense of relief after having gotten through the worst parts of a deep freeze?
I've been a year-round cyclist for several years now, but I still get a little anxious when I hear that the next day's commute is going to be exceptionally cold, well below average. The past two mornings the temperature was -12° (f) when I left the house for work, so tonight I will sleep much easier since tomorrow is predicted to start out warmer (0°) and the entire week ahead predicted to be nicer yet.

Around here we got our cold weather last month. We almost set a new record low when it reached -10F; the record is -12F. It was glorious since the city doesn't have the equipment to deal with snow removal, so the motorists were confounded for a few days. It was nice and quiet, even near the freeway, as people drove much less and did so at much lower than normal speeds. Unfortunately, it's almost all melted and gone now.
About those pro wood burning comments. UGH! I don't know about what happens back east, but here on the west coast when we have cold weather we also have high pressure systems and minimal air mixing. That means that all that soot and those particulates that people pump into the air by burning wood stay put until they are bio-filtered out by someone's lungs (yes, I exaggerate). Last month, my city was in violation of the federal clean air act for about half the month. Our local air pollution district wouldn't even ban burning even though we had very few power outages. They were concerned that people's utility bills would be too high if they were not allowed to burn. Talk about externalizing costs! Burning wood in an urban/suburban environment is barbaric, IMO.

Relief is in sight! Today it was 35F and sunny--only the fourth day above freezing since winter started on 12/22/13. The eight inches of powder we got over the weekend made the sunlight fresh and sparkly.
It was cool to see so many people out walking and riding today--most of them with their jackets open to the "warm" air!

I walked to the post office yesterday and the temperature was 42 degrees. That isn't rare but it is eight degrees above average. I'll take it. The rest of the week looks to be a bit below average. I just hope the next batch of snow misses us. Since I'm in the middle of the Rocky Mountains the weather patterns are affected by them. Sometimes the mountains split the clouds and they go around the town.
We have had one record cold temperature this year. I would prefer to experience a high temperature record in the winter. It is amazing but seeing a 75 degree record in a past winter just looks unbelievable.

We hit 40 today for the first time since...a very long time ago. There were not a lot of bike riders, probably due to the winter storm that hit yesterday. It felt really weird to ride without all my winter gear (and I have to admit, it felt really good to go fast.)

We have had one hell of a cold winter in most parts of North America. But global warming has not abated. World wide, January 2014 was the fourth warmest January on record. The last time the world had a colder than average January was back in 1976.
