Why would you duct-tape your spokes?

Saw a guy biking around yesterday, both wheels were 100% covered in duct-tape from the hub out to the rim. Was a great WTF moment for the day.

Any ideas?

Theft deterrent? Who would want to steal a bike that looks like it's held together by duct tape?

Probably just some idiot who had a couple rolls of duct tape laying around with nothing better to do.

That said I get the same impression when I see cars with cracked fenders / bumper covers or rust holes taped up with duct tape. Not sure if the owner is too cheap to fix the problem right or truly believes tape will make the problem go away.

It looked like a beater in general. Maybe his wheel was really out of true, and he used duct tape to force the spokes back into a semblance of correct? Or, some poorly thought out idea about aerodynamics?

The first thing I would thing of is "reflector tape". Was in day time by chance? See in Portland at some of the events during pedalpolooza.

Redneck style disc covers. Or, it's just possible, he has 2 or 3 broken spokes, perhaps with a make-shift fix, and taped the whole wheel over to cover them up or keep them from flopping.

I've covered up some graphics on my paint job with duct tape. And I keep a few turns wrapped around the top tube. Handy for field repairs/other. Takes up no space.
