Yeah mobile phone technology is kind of scary. I just bought a cheapo smartphone, but suddenly I'm using it everywhere. I loaded the Kindle app and am now going thru my wife's book list. Great for the bus!!

A friend gave me her old smartphone when she upgraded a few months ago. I didn't want to use it as a cell phone, my cheap tracfone flip phone is fine for my light talk/text needs and I don't want to pay a cell phone bill. I really like the smartphone for the other features and I use it like a mini wifi tablet that fits into my pocket. I like my Nexus 7 tablet but I don't carry it around much. The mp3 player, camera and the GPS on the smartphone is nice. I work in GIS and I'm used to using expensive Trimble GPS units. At home we have a simple Garmin Dakota GPS, which is quite nice. The GPS on the smartphone seems to be at least as good as the Garmin.

I recently decided that I wanted a newer (used) smartphone and I just bought a ZTE Flash on ebay for $60. I looked carefully at different phones to find all the device features that I want. It has a 12mp camera on it. It's going to be fun to play with this and load it up with apps to use on the go.

I'm exploring the many different GPS mapping apps that are available. I'm trying free ones for now. I may pay for one in the future if it's a good one. I'm particularly interested in the ones that will let me load topo maps to the device and make tracks and waypoints (like the Garmin).

Obsolete, didn't realize I was replying to a post that was 3 weeks old. Gotta learn to look at dates on these things.

Three weeks is like this morning's newspaper....Usually the bumped threads around here are 3 years old. :D

Have you tried gmap-pedometer.com?

Do you have to log in to use it? I went there, but couldn't get any maps up.

I find it to be an outdated website and not at all user-friendly. Even back in the day it was a chore to use it, and I quit it after a short time.

I hope somebody knows of a more modern site, preferably one that works well on mobile devices and with touch screens.
