Happy Earth Day!

To all those who pedal their bikes and are kind to our home planet--

Thank you for your service!

Your mention of Earth Day got me Googling and I found this interesting article on the Earth Day website:

The world’s first completely electric solar-powered bus was introduced in Adelaide, Australia toward the end of last year. The bus, named the Tindo, is not only the first of its kind (although there have been other solar-power “assisted” hybrid buses), but it is also completely free to Adelaide residents, and offers free wifi as an added bonus! The Adelaide City Council commissioned the bus from New Zealand company Designline International as part of a larger move toward a greener transportation infrastructure. A 2010 study showed that 36% of Adelaide’s greenhouse gas emissions came from transportation, and plenty of residents have taken notice, as evidenced by a surge in hybrid-car purchases.
What makes Adelaide’s Tindo bus, named after an Aboriginal word for “sun,” particularly interesting, however, is that there are no solar panels on the bus itself. Instead, the bus receives electric power from solar panels located on the city’s main bus station. The Tindo bus is expected to save over 70,000 kg of carbon and 14,000 liters of diesel fuel in its first year alone, and because of its revolutionary technology, was featured in the Solar City Convention Spirit Festival and has received wide coverage in the clean-tech community.
Ultimately, the success of the Tindo bus, an engineless answer to the problem of greenhouse gas emissions, proves that public transportation can be vastly improved throughout the world with very little inconvenience, if any, to the public. And in the fight against climate change, more of these buses are exactly what the world needs.

I'd love to have such a bus in my city.

Roody is an early adopter, so he celebrates on the 20th... and then on the 22nd.

I'll be back in 2 days to wish everyone well...

Every day should be Earth Day anyway.

It always seems to happen that I end up driving the car for some reason or another on Earth Day, of all days. Almost all the other days I ride my bike to work. But today called for a high wind warning and I don't feel safe riding the bike in 50mph gusts.

One year I was thinning trees on Earth Day, by coincidence. I thought that was funny, cutting trees down on Earth Day.

At least I didn't drive anywhere.

It's the Rolls Royce of planets and people treat it like an old rusty truck.

Somebody needs to come up with a bike analogy to replace Rolls Royce.

While there are some mighty nice bikes, most of those are so little known among the public that the metaphor wouldn't hold up.

Really, would calling Earth the Damien Hirst “Butterfly” Trek Madone of planets communicate the idea?

And when in a Rolls it is a delightful environment.

Ha, that was my thought exactly! Earth is the Trek Madone of planets...we treat it like a rusty old Huffy.

For me, Trek Madone conveys no information. It's a name I've heard of, but that's about it.

I'd go with a rusty Montgomery Ward 10 speed. I've one of those separate downtube from bottom bracket while I was riding it. Which is kind of what is happening to the Earth.

Not much for me, either. I was thinking Co-Motion Divide, but it would be different for somebody else.

Downtube separates from the BB? Oh what a feeling!

I had school the night of Earth Day, so I was also in the "had to drive" group.

On a more positive note, I did harvest my first few handfuls of beans out of my first ever garden, so I guess that was a step in the right direction.

My Earth Day was quite the drag, I was sitting around waiting to hear about a phone call for a new job I'm starting soon. At least it's an Earth Friendly job (5 Minute Walk from home).
