They said I'd never make it.

I met some people today while I was fishing and we started talking. And as soon as I said that I hope to never get a car, they said that's impossible and that I need a car. And that I need to be able to drive if I ever want to have a chance at finding a girl. They told me I can't live without a car.

Only if you want to TOTALLY limit your opportunities in life. Go for it, to each their own. Think about going "car lite" for starters.

It's not impossibleto survive without a car.
It's not impossibleto find a life partner without a car.

And as long as you're happy living without a car, that's great.

However, you may discover that life throws you a curve somewhere along the way, and all of a sudden you may discover that owning a car is the better option.

You're still in high school (right?) ... so just barely beginning on life's journey. Some people's lives follow the exact plan they have in mind, but for some people everything changes and you find yourself in a place you would never have imagined.

When I was 18, going to high school in a small country town in Canada, I never imagined all the twists and turns my life has taken, and especially that I'd be living in Australia later in life, halfway around the world. I've gone through years when I have lived car free ... I've gone through years when I have lived car light ... and I've gone through years where the best option was to drive a lot. Careful consideration went into those options, weighing up the pros and cons, costs and benefits, and I made the decisions about what would be best for me at the time.

I have found it is better to live MY life the way I choose... I have had quite a few people give me all sorts of advice... some good, much of it not good. I just smile, nod and go about my merry way. Quite a few years ago there were some people at work that thought I should not be working there, they did all they could to get rid of me... funny thing is, they are gone and I am still there!

I don't buy the advice given to young people to make decisions based only on what's best for them. We should do not only what's best for ourselves. We should also do what's best for our family, our loved ones, our community and country, and our planet.

I was raised to do not what's right for me, but just do what's right. If you think being carfree is the right thing to do, for example, then try to do it even when it's difficult or inconvenient.
