Carfreeforme, unless you intend to totally drop off the grid and not use anything that requires identification why bother? Your protest affects nobody. Only you and your wife will know until you present your ID to somebody. Nobody cares if you have a drivers license until you crash a car or are caught speeding. Any fine you might get in an emergency won't really cost a lot and who will actually be checking to see you have a current drivers licence if you do drive in an emergency? A cop would be more likely to let you off in such a situation if one even asked for your license. The government certainly doesn't care if you have a drivers license or a state ID. With either one you are identified.
Keep your license. Consider it a convenience tax that really doesn't cost that much for what it allows you to do. Don't make a big deal out of this. Accept it and let it go. You'll feel better.

Thinking is good. How else to come to a good decision except by giving just consideration to all options?
