Sidewalk scrapped due to perceived parking problems.

Okay, I'll state up front that I've been against this project from the get go, but as I don't live in the community that will end up footing the bill, I figure any input I may have had would be discarded (assuming that I could actually make it to the meetings). But this takes the cake- Sidewalk Plans Scrapped At Gathering Place - KTUL.com - Tulsa, Oklahoma - News, Weather & Sports. Do they honestly think excluding a sidewalk will prevent people from parking in their 'hood whenever there is a big event scheduled??

This massive park is the brain child of George Kaiser, his way of giving back to the community. Of course, this has so far entailed the destruction of a historical mansion and 2 apartment complexes with ~550 units scheduled for the wrecking ball as well. The primary reason why the Blair Mansion was torn down was due to the fact that the people the current owner had hired to move it told him that the neighborhood streets were too narrow to navigate- obviously his 'experts' didn't think to just put a temp road from the back of the property to Riverside Drive... Of course, why a structure of local historical significance wasn't incorporated into the plan for the new park escapes me as well.

Sounds like you need to get on the planning committee.

Sound like the typical short sighted carccentric society we live in...

They are widening the road I live on, well the main road that my road leads to. No sidewalks, and no cycle lanes. However they do plan to leave an easement for them in the future  Sad part is there have been multiple pedestrian deaths on this road over the past decade, and to add insult to injury there are 3 schools on this road. The primary school will not allow children to walk to school even though the subdivision is right next door.

Aaron :)

OK, 'nuff said.

Bruce Goff's Bavinger House, an architectural icon, was torn down in that state. They do not have a soft spot for presevation out there...

Automotivist development is a way of having debtors' prisons. By investing in making certain areas unlivable except by driving, and thus unpleasant to live in, investors ensure that jobs will lure people to those areas and the money will be spent driving to more pleasant destinations or saving up to move to better areas.

Because lots of money is spent on driving, these areas generate the strong investment returns that provide the most successful to live in better areas.

This situation reminds me of what my friends in Texas told me when I briefly lived in that state. They explained that the only reason Texas doesn't slide off into the Gulf of Mexico is because Oklahoma, well, (insert crass term for fellatio)

Due our state's Complete Streets law, scrapping of the sidewalk plans would not have happened in my locale, and in addition, many sections in my city are going through a sidewalk renaissance, with brand new ones being installed in places that never had one or replacing ones that have deteriorated over the decades.

The only people in the video speaking out against the sidewalk were elderly, and seemed to be of the mindset, "Now that I got mine, **** you".
