Thank you Roody ... yes, it is Number Six.

And, of course, we celebrated by cycling and going for a walk on the beach.

One of the first threads I replied to on BF, about six years ago, was ”Involving bicycles in your wedding” with a link to this affirmation on the Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling Forum:

    Yes, it's true!

February/March-ish 2003, I posted something here about going to the 2003 PBP, and Rowan responded. We conversed briefly and indicated that we were both going. And that was about it. We didn't arrange to meet or anything.

On August 22, 2003 in Noigent Le Roi, France, at the last control of Paris-Brest-Paris, with about 100 km to go, I was walking through the dining area with my plate of green beans and chips (you eat whatever you're craving at the time on a 1200K randonnee), when someone called out the name "Machka"! I thought, "Who here would know my online name??" And it was Rowan. We chatted briefly, then he continued the ride, and I went and took a 10-min nap under a picnic table (you sleep wherever you can find a likely looking spot on a 1200K randonnee).

We chatted now and then on a couple forums over the next year.

Then in September 2004, I went to Australia for a 3-month cycling tour which also included the Great Southern Randonnee. Rowan also did the Great Southern Randonnee, and a little bit later my touring partner and I stayed with Rowan for a few days ... a couple days longer than originally planned because I had a freehub failure I had to get fixed before we could continue.

It wasn't until April 2005 that we finally became a couple.

(And incidentally, we were both car-free when we met. )

Thank you Roody for the thread. A nice anniversary surprise. We do lock horns a lot, but in the end, we're just human beings trying to make our ways in the world the best we can with due respect for ourselves and others. That's something we do have in common.

Thanks for reminding me of this ... it doesn't seem like it was 6 years ago.

    And thanks for the congratulations!

    Further to the story ...

On our wedding day 6 years ago, we cycled a century (100 miles) .. and then got married on the dock on a little lake near Jasper.
