Temporary and/or portable bike rack ideas.
I'm guessing this is the right place to ask for information about temporary and/or portable bike racks that would be used at a festival. I've been one of the many volunteers that have helped put on some of the local festivals over the years, and one of the things I keep mentioning as an improvement would be to have some sort of bike parking at these festivals. I was helping with one of these over the weekend that's in one of the big city parks and again noticed people locking their bikes up to trees, poles etc as there weren't any bike racks there. There aren't any permanent bike racks in this park (I keep hearing people don't use them when I bring this up), and I'd like to make a specific suggestion about something that could be brought in and used for the event and then removed. Who's got some ideas on something that could be made (the Park District has some very talented employees that should be able to make something from a plan) or bought that would be a good way to test out my idea that people would use these racks at the festival instead of the trees and signs they have been? Or ride there instead of driving.

What does your local cycling association use at events like your annual Sustainable Living Expo?

A local environmental group handles the valet bike parking for events in this metro area. They don't even hit bicyclists up for donations, but they do ask people who drive to donate.

Because that would take volunteers that probably would be hard to come by. They don't have valet parking for cars, and most of the people riding to these festivals are locking their bikes to whatever they can find since there aren't any bike racks. My desire is to come up with a simple easy to implement way to have more people ride to these festivals.

Have you got in touch with your local council to see if they have fence barriers? I am thinking of the kind that have vertical bars and come in panels 12 or 15 feet long. Or the council could have some other structure that could be adapted. Even think of setting up a series of simple horizontal poles or cables that people can suspend their bikes from by their saddles and put their locks around.

This is not really a one person job, IMO. Besides buying the bike rack, you will have to find a place to store it between events. You'll have to work out logistics with each venue in advance of events. And of course you'll have to set up the rack and tear it down each time. Get some help!
I think it's awesome that you're willing to do this.Good Luck!
