You've mistaken funmaking for smug provincialism. A common error, I suppose.

<edit> I understand they filmed "That 70s Show" in Iowa to save on set decoration. Probably just a rumor.

Perhaps, though you might be mistaking smug provincialism for cleverness.

Me, too. If they were going to be smug about being anti-American, it seems it would be better aimed at our drive through anything culture. Drive in resturants, coffee shops, banks, funeral parlors, drive by shootings.

I haven't used a drive through teller, but it's not like I can't see they exist. I can't even generally use drive through ATM machines. My pickup is too tall to reach down to the machine, and my car is too low to reach up to it.

But, I'll bet that your bike is just the right height. Goldilocks would be proud of you.

I raised that question many posts ago (see post 48). Why would a "carfree" person want to encourage the use of drive-thrus?

We take your word for it that they exist in certain parts of the US. We just think it is hillarious (and a little surprising) that they still exist when other countries, and parts of the US, either never had them or moved on from them to modern technology decades ago.

Why wouldn't they? There's no code of ethics for the carfree. Myself I make up my own rules. I occasionally use drive-thrus but won't buy coffee if it's in a throwaway cup.

For the same reason a carfree person would repeatedly post about using ozone destroying air travel to go vacation traveling all over the world.

Of course it is only your artificial and wacky construct that anybody is encouraging anything or anybody else by their use of a drive-thru banking service.

Yeah, but when you DO catch them, they blame it on last years equipment. Or not enough air in their pneumatic tubes.

I was kind of stunned by the whole thing. After all, the bank is situated in a popular bike corridor and my city is generally very bike friendly.

How would you respond?
When she said that there was a bike rack out front and you should park there, you should've said "there's car parking spaces up front too, does that mean drivers need to park there instead?"

Depending on the ride, I get ripe enough that it's in everyone's benefit to keep me on the outside of the glass. Think of the drive through as an air out lane.

That's where online banking (banking in the comfort of your own home) ... and ATMs (machines that don't care how you smell) ... come into play.

Bottom line: perhaps not everybody else is as connected/hip as you think you are.

I'm not all that connected/hip. If I were ... I'd be doing it all by Smartphone or something even more advanced.

But I think most people are pretty connected these days.

This morning my son drove me to the drive-thru. I had him pull up ahead of the pneumatic tube. I got out of the passenger seat, walked back to the tube, and did my banking. The teller had no problem with it. My only problem was that when my son activated the car's rear window washer, it squirted me in the head. The other customers in their cars got a kick out of that.

I bank with my phone all the time - which, by definition, proves you don't need to be hip

You only earn your "hip" credentials if by using your phone you get the impression that it somehow makes you more modern or intelligent than those who do not; hip merit badge can also be met by repeatedly boasting about your "smarts" on this subject.

Sorry, but you have it completely and utterly backwards. First, a person is hip and then by their very hipness, they define the requirements for being hip. There is not a set of standards to become hip; we already are hip and just do what we do. Then other wanna-bes and whiners attempt in their cute, pathetic little way to become what we already are.

We, as cyclists, are already hip - no matter how we "bank".

Lock up and walk in the bank? Hip. Use a smartphone to bank? Hip. Ride through the drive-thru? Hip. Write checks and mail them in? Yep, still hip. It's the bike, man, the bike.

Oh come on, you're so hip they could make an edgy, modern TV drama about your lifestyle, perhaps starring Bryan Cranston. And you've even given us a hint at the title.

But owning an IPhone or Smartphone is hip enough, even if it's never used for doing banking.

But doesn't possession of a Smartphone or iPhone with associated phone contract get an LCFer stripped of his/her Simple Life Merit Badge?
Of course isn't using bank services at all less simple than using a sock drawer or mattress for all deposits and withdrawals of cash?
