This would be something to get excited about if the authorities made the ban on cars permanent! Or levied a smog "surcharge" on automobiles and used that to make all public transportation free.

They made the bike shares free, then told people they should stay indoors.

I think they're getting ready to storm the Bastille . . . .

In my early high school years, I remember hearing about Tokyo banning cars anytime smog levels got too high; and that was twenty years ago. I suppose any city might ban cars when enough people get sick. Or complain about not being able to see a major landmark.

Update:
Apparently the partial car ban reduced traffic by 40%. With less traffic congestion, the remaining cars were not stuck in traffic with their engines running, further reducing emissions. Paris now needs long-term plans to reduce dependence on automobiles.

The ecology minister seems to have figured it out. This kind of hasty, stop-gap measuring isn't going to help longterm. Bans need to be permanent probably....

IIRC, there was a thriving business selling cans of air in Tokyo back then. That seemed like the very definition of insanity to me, and yet Tokyo's air back then was nothing compared to many urban centers today.

I think so too. Paris is one of the great treasures of the world. Somebody responsible should be maintaining it. I wonder what Haussman would make of it?

I wonder if voluntary austerity will achieve the same reductions as the ban did.
People seem to have loved the results of the ban. Driving must have been shockingly pleasant for those with uneven license plates that day.

So it's as simple as flipping a coin: "heads even-numbered license plates grounded, tails uneven."

Seriously, I don't know what might work for Paris to help cut traffic and emissions. Possibilities include congestion charges, better alternative infrastructure, widespread partial ban of cars, totally ban of cars in sensitive areas, and steps to make motoring more inconvenient and/or more expensive.

The problem with reducing congestion is that the people that drive will get there faster and receive positive reinforcement for their driving. "It's everyone else that needs to change, not me. If they get out of my way and off my streets, things are better for me and I don't have to change. It's their problem, not mine."

Smart idea... but now that you've let the cat out of the bag, the authorities will put a stop to this plan.

It strikes me as more of an experiment. Let people get upset, force them to start considering alternatives, and see the benefits to air quality and street congestion if fewer of them drive. It doesn't matter that they didn't implement the perfect long-term solution right off the bat.

Citizens aren't always ready to do what's necessary. Sometimes democracy requires a leader who will move on her/his own to do the right thing. The people will probably catch up to the leader eventually. If not, they have opportunities to remove her/him from office and restore the status quo.

From what i understood is that parts of the centre of paris will become car-free and diesel cars will be banned from the city entirely in 2020.
a lot of personal transport is done on two wheels in paris btw, motorcycles and scooters everywhere you look. With a car you get nowhere. Its a permanent traffic jam.
