Double century ideas in San Diego County?
Hello all,
I usually frequent the touring forum, but lately I've had a burning idea that I'd like some feedback on, and this is the group for it.
On my TransAm ride last year, my longest day was 134 miles. My bike weighed 90 pounds with all of my equipment, and I averaged around 12mph. This got me thinking: how much further could I go on an unloaded bike? I'm keen on breaking the 200 mile mark this summer, so I've started daydreaming of potential loops. I'm from Vista, CA, and would like to leave from my house if possible. My thoughts have generally lead me towards doing a loops through Julian and Anza Borrego, but I also know that riding the 76 and 78 can be pretty dangerous. I could also ride the coast south and find something down there. Do any of you have ideas or suggestions for a roughly 200 mile loop in San Diego County? I'm not doing it for the speed, but rather to accomplish a long, slow goal of mine. Thank you!

Heard of the Borrego Double? I did it a few years ago and had a good time. Not sure how bike friendly the roads would be for a solo ride, though.

Wake up. Check wind direction. Ride downwind. Call a friend for ride home.

you will not be riding anza-borrego state park in the summer what with 105+ temps. best bet from vista is to loop north (through camp
pendleton) and into orange county into the flatitudes of the la basin. hook up first with the sgrt and then the sart and then head around the northern end of the santa ana mtns thru the 91 fwy corridor and hook up with the 15 fwy corridor and head south past temecula. hwy 76 has a wide shoulder west of the 15 fwy. should have approx 5k of elevation gain but the requisite mileage.
you could head south towards the border but it would involve more slowing elevation gain or doing repeats of same areas.

You can check out the California Triple Crown series. they have many doubles in SoCal. The Borrego and Oceanside doubles are the closest to San Diego. The Hemet DC is not that far away.
