Leroy Varga / PBP in today's NY Times

Today's New York Times has a very nice article about Leroy Varga who will be riding PBP this year at age 80. It's on their website but probably not free access.

I couldn't figure out how to do it. I know how to post links generally, of course, but I have an acct with NYT so it wasn't a public access page.

I found a link to another site where someone posted the article.

Awesome, thanks!

Edit: WTF is up with the NYT editors and fact checkers? "It’s known as the Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur". Shouldn't that be "Randonné" or "Randonnée"? (I forget if it's masc or fem) "Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur" refers to a male rider of PBP!

The NYT are correct with 'Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur'. The other version is the 'Paris-Brest-Paris Audax'. They'll coincide again in 2011.

Yep, that's the actual name of the event.

I met LeRoy in 1979 when I was chairman of the American Youth Hostels Bike Committee in New York --predecessor to today's 5 Boro Bike Club, and he joined the leadership training course for ride leaders --not that he needed much training.
In addition to the PBP exploits, LeRoy has also served for many years in the 5 Boro Bike Tour as Supercaptian of Team Cutoff --the marshall teams who route riders who choose not to continue to Staten Island back to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.
We should all be blessed to qualify for PBP when we're 80, huh?
Hats off to LeRoy . . .

Really! Plenty of people at 80 can't even do 600k in a car.
