    1) You might want to ask this question in the Touring forum: http://www.bikeforums.net/touring/
The Long Distance forum is more for centuries, double centuries, brevets, 24-hour races, etc. like the description says.

    2) Have you ridden with 100 pounds of backpack before? I'm guessing you'll get to the end of the driveway on the first day before you turn around and change your mind about that method.

    3) Why would you need to ride with 100 pounds of backpack anyway. If you ask in the Touring forum, you'll see that many of us tour comfortably with much, much less than that.

    4) We have no idea if you can manage 30-40 miles a day because we have no idea what you can manage now. Definitely go to the Touring forum and especially have a look for the "are you mentally prepared for a tour" thread. It should still be on the first page.

Way back about twenty years ago when I was 21 I went from Maryland to Florida with a backpack on a cheep mountain bike.I don't recomend it cheep mountain bikes breakdown more often and backpack are ment for hiking not riding.I didn't have that much stuff in it but I was wishing that I didn't have it at all.I suggest looking at the touring section more and try to get a little more prepaired.
While it can be done it is not that much fun, bags mounted on the bike are much better than a backpack.

Is 90 pounds of that load an anvil for making repairs along the way?

    1. Check out the Touring forums
    2. Get your gear down to 30-40lb
    3. You will be much better off with racks and panniers, or even a trailer, than a backpack
    4. Look out for a 2nd-hand or bike co-op bike, you'll get more for similar money. Read the stuff in the touring forums to help you choose a bike.

just an FYI. Most people go south from Big Sur to Santa Barbara (or whatever) because the prevailing winds are out of the NW. Can it be done? Sure By you? Only you know. I will say that all that weight on a k-mart bike into a 25+mph headwind sounds like no fun to me...
