I do all my riding without padded shorts. My ass was so sore the first time I did 70 miles. I don't have any trouble with any distance ever since.

Your body has adapted well without the padding. I have been riding for 8 years and if I don't wear padded shorts I can't go more than an hour without some sort of chaffing and soreness.
