Books on long distance cycling

Hi folks,

My wife and I have recently started cycling much more now that we are empty nesters. We are looking to do some long distance tours such as the century. does anyone have a recommendation on a good book or training guide to help get prepared. Any information is greatly appreciated.

I hope this helps some.

I use the the Complete book of Long Distance Cycling, by Edmund Bruke and Ed Pavelka, ISBN 1-57954-199-2. I just pulled it down to give you the reference numbers, only to realize that I need to read it again. It is full of information.

Another book that is great, Bycycling Medicine, by Arnie Baker, ISBN 0-684-84443-5. This book also has a ton of information, and he covers almost every topic in cycling with relation to the riders health.

With the knowledge I've gained from these two books, I have never had any problems with nutrition or hydration.

Although I have yet to do any real long distance cycling, I've read and enjoyed this book too. Lots of great info.

I'm sure there's some great info in cycling books, but I'm thinking the best use of one would be to load it in a saddlebag and take it for lots of rides.

I'd also recommend the Burke/Pavelka book. They have their biases—they're clearly interested in riding relatively fast, so there's more of an emphasis on liquid "foods" and such than fits, say, my style—but it has very useful information on all kinds of long distance riding.
