Speed averages to consider for racing

For someone who wants to return to racing.

for Road cycling more less. Perhaps mt bike as well

but in road what type of average speeds should one be able to ride at

to be able to move to more serious races and rides?

i was looking at some postings for a ontario provincial and times for a 101km mens race was 2 and half hours was the top ride, now that is fast.

Is it possible to learn how to ride fast ?

This is not a long distance specific type of question is it?

Nobody is fast on a bike upon exiting their mother's womb. So, of course, it's possible to 'learn' how to ride fast. There are lots of good books out there on training for cycling. Get one.

Last year, they were doing the "Thursday Night Crits" on a loop out near the end of my 10-mile run. I think I timed some of them doing 29-mph laps there, thought not every lap was that fast. I tried a lap when no one was around and hit about 21 mph, if I remember right. And that about did me in, after just one lap @ 0.92 miles. This was "serious" racing in the sense that they take it reasonably seriously, but it's not high-stakes, high-budget or pro or anything, either. (My lap:

I checked on the results on a 20k time trial up north of here, and the times ranged from about 26 minutes to 46 minutes. I timed myself on a run of similar length, and find I'm at about the 46 minute range. So I might beat somebody. Of course, that somebody might have one leg and be pulling a baby trailer, you never know.

I've never been around much racing, but find it informative just to go to some of these events. They're usually free to watch.

Everybody must start with what they have and then begin to train.

Join a club ride and if they drop you, you're not ready. Train some more.

It's not about absolute speed so throw that notion out right now.
