Or you could just get used to seeing things in units that are easy to use with other units and easy to do math with. It's you guys that are in the minority and who need to change. This is the 21st century, not the 18th.

I've noticed some Americans who have managed to go halfway towards the metric system: I laugh every time I see someone boasting that they've saved 100 grams on some component so that their bike now weighs under 14 lbs - now that is confusing! At least try to be consistent.

I am running the 12-30 tiagra cassette with an ultegra short cage and a compact crankset on my 2012 Roubaix SL2. Works great for me.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I just added the 12-30 cassette to my Trek Madone Ultegra 6700 setup with a short cage rear derailleur. The only adjustment was going from a chain of 106 links to 108 links.

After my first ride outdoors with my club, 45 miles with several climbs of various lengths and steepness, I can report that it worked as perfectly as it did on my trainer for several rides indoors.

A factor that I have never seen called out on the advantage of this type of cassette is how it solves one of the problems of using a compact double, namely the double shifts. With a cassette like this, and the amazingly flexible new 10 speed chains, a rider can use all 10 gears while staying on the big chain ring. With a properly tuned drive train, and using the ability to trim the front shift, it seems to me that there is no longer a need to avoid cross chaining. It just plain works great.

Using cassettes like these, I can do extended rides that would have required multiple double shifts in the past with a smaller cassette, without ever leaving the big ring.

In my opinion, the 12-30 cassette with a 50-34 crank approaches perfection for the person lookiong for a really usable shifting setup.

Now I am just waiting for Shimano to wake up and offer this size cassette in 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace.

I totally agree. Plus, you can get even closer to perfection with 33-48 chainrings because you can avoid double-shifting by staying in the 48 tooth ring even longer than in the 50 tooth ring. Plus, the low gear of 33-30 is virtually the same as the lowest gear on a standard road triple setup, which is most often 30-27

I would be spinning out too frequently on a 48-12.

You can get a 34 to work? I still use 9 speed and a 32 was the largest I can get to work successfully on Ultegra. I run SRAM 11-32s on both of my road bikes.

Yeah, a 48x12 will take you to almost 40mph. Do you have a pro contract?

Reality check, 50X12 at the highest cadence I can muster is 30 mph on my bike.

I got the Tiagra 12-30 for my Ultegra setup and tested it last weekend.
Here's a blog post on the cassette purchase: https://ccorlew.blogspot.com/2012/03/fight-fight.html (there's also a comment well worth the read)
Here's my first ride report: https://ccorlew.blogspot.com/2012/03/sierra-road.html which only mentions lower gears in passing, but makes the point that it worked really well.

I snuck a 12-30 on my rented Cervelo last weekend, worked great with the Apex. Swapped it onto a triple to go thru Arches NP on Monday though, definitely glad it was a triple.

Among the things that Shimano announced a couple of weeks ago was that there will be an Ultegra-level 12-30 cassette released, hopefully sometime this summer. So that should give a much lighter option than the Tiagra-level 12-30 that is currently available.

Shimano also announced that there will be a new version of the Ultegra rear derailleur that will officially handle a 30-tooth cog (although the current one already works fine with a 30-tooth in most instances). Also, new versions of the Tiagra and 105 rear derailleurs will officially handle 32-tooth cogs. This info was stated in a couple of online articles, here is one of the sources.

There seems to be a lot of good feelings towards the Tiagra 10-speed. I am glad it turned out to be good, I just ordered a new all Tiagra drive-train with the compact double.

In my opinion, the 12-30 cassette with a 50-34 crank approaches perfection for the person lookiong for a really usable shifting setup.
This is going to be my setup, I was hoping that would be a good one.

The CS-6700 (Ultegra level) 12-30 cassette is features on a Shimano Tech Doc. Has anyone seen it for sale?

I installed a 5700A derailleur and the 12-30 cassette. No spacer needed with the cassette, which is nice.
About 100km now and its working well, once you figure out that after the jump you still have two more gears.

"June/July" is the release date that I heard for most of the new stuff that Shimano announced in March, and that will hopefully include the Ultegra 12-30 cassette.

Really if that were true the all those Pro Racers would not wear gold chains around their lovely necks while racing. '_'

Interesting. I wonder if that's only available in certain countries. I would have picked one up but both my local shops I patronize says Shimano claims they only offer that particular spread available in the Tiagra range. I did, however, put a SRAM 12-32 cassette on, shifting perfectly with a short cage 6700 mech.

Does anyone know if I could trade in my 2011 4500-series Tiagra triple 9-speed? And who would be willing to accept that? (*chuckles*). I'm starting to like the new Tiagra with compact cranks and 12-30T cogset, that in reality, is the old/current 105.
